Chapter 16: Wild Nights

A/N: Sorry I haven't posted in a bit, I haven't been feeling well and have been trying to feel better.

It had been a week since the kiss, Joe and Mariah decided to go for it. They wanted to be together, but it had to be secret. They knew the consequences of getting caught. Luz, of course, found out. He had seen them disappear into the field and not come out for a few hours. He had pulled her aside the next morning and pestered it out of her.

The only way she could get him to keep his mouth shut was to threaten to never be his wing-man again. When he heard this, he promised to keep his mouth shut. She was his best wing-man he ever had; he couldn't lose that.

Eugene also knew. But she didn't have to threaten him with anything. He knew to keep his mouth closed.

The company was staying in a small town, that meant hot meals, showers, and a peaceful night's sleep.

Joe and Mariah were able to find some to be alone together, but not as much as they wanted. There were always people around. They could meet at night but they didn't want to explain to the families they were billeted with where they were going late at night. They settled for secret kisses behind buildings, and being near each other whenever they could.

Joe was currently with a few of the men from Easy, they were standing in a small grassy area in front of some stables where the army was keeping their trucks until they shipped out. Mariah was across the field playing with a couple stray dogs. Her hair was down and her smile was in full effect. Joe couldn't help but look at her.

"If you keep staring like that people are gonna catch on." Luz whispered to him.

"Shut up."

As Mariah continued to play with the dog Malarkey and Moore rode into the field on a motorcycle.

"What the fuck is this?" Mariah laughed, walking over to the men.

"We just went for a ride; you want to go for one?" Malarkey asked.

"Normally I'd say yes, but seeing that beer in your hand i'm gonna say no."

"YOU'RE NO FUN!"

Smokey had come back from the hospital that morning. Easy was called to the "mess hall" for a small celebration. Joe and Mariah were sat beside each other. His hand on her upper thigh, her hand holding his.

Even though she was supposed to be paying attention to Smokey she couldn't; Liebgott kept squeezing her inner thigh. She sent him side eyed glare, he sent her a smirk and a wink in return.

Smokey finished his speech by dedicating one of his Purple Heart's to Talbert. The hall broke out in loud cheers.

Lipton stepped into the place Smokey stood seconds ago. "Couple of announcements people. First, the training exercise scheduled for 22h00, has been cancelled." Everyone cheered again.

"Thank the lord!" Mariah yelled out.

"Calm down Compton." Buck yelled to her.

Mariah flipped him off. The two had formed a friendship so it wasn't odd to see them do this. Buck felt like a much older sibling.

"Secondly, all passes are hereby revoked, we're heading back to France. Pack up all your gear, we will not be returning to England. Anyone who had not made out a will go to the supply office. Trucks depart at 0700. As you were." Mariah put her chin into her hand and stared into the distance.
