Holt Hyde had suggested the idea of splitting himself and Jackson Jekyll almost offhandedly, it wasn't meant in a rude way. It wasn't as if he wanted  to be apart from Jackson exactly, he and Jackson were brothers in a sense. Twins, even. They loved each other like brothers would.

Jackson made sure Holt didn't fall behind in classes he didn't quite understand on his own, always happy to leave study sheets he'd created for Holt. And Holt always got aggravated when Jackson was picked on, if Jackson hadn't told him to drop it, it wouldn't end very pretty.

But the thought of splitting was brought up either way, no matter how happy they ultimately were sharing a body, it wasn't always sunshine and rainbows. Holt had no real issue sharing a body, he had just sometimes wished he could be his own person. Jackson had agreed in the end, he was happy sharing a body with Holt. But the idea of being his own person was a nice thought, so they had come to the agreement of trying to separate themselves. 

They decided to keep it their little secret as Jackson had started working on a serum to successfully separate them, he had spent so much time in the Mad Science Lab. He hardly spent time with his friends, and he had been skipping out on Lunch in order to spend his time working away on the serum. 

Jackson couldn't be blamed, he wasn't a Mad Scientist for nothing. He wasn't one to half-ass experiments, once he was zoned into something it was near impossible to pull him away until it was finished. Holt had to make Jackson agree to take breaks by letting him out, whenever Jackson would take a break (Holt would beg him to take a break) he would put on their headphones and put on a song he knew Holt liked. 

Holt would take it upon himself to feed their body and socialize as Jackson slept in the head-space, their friends would bombard him with questions about what Jackson was up to. Though Holt would always make up some excuse or another, always keeping Jackson's true work a secret as they had agreed on doing.
