First Year
Sirius heard he door slam and glanced at James. James looked back at him and sighed.
"He'll talk when he's ready mate," said James. Sirius rolled his eyes.
"Peter deserved it anyway I don't get what Lupins beating himself up about," he said.
"Oi," James said, elbowing him. "Peter may have been being a bit stupid but that doesn't mean he deserved to be punched,".
"That's exactly-".
"So you two sleep together now?" Came Peters voice from his bed opposite James'. Sirius glared at Peter.
"What's your problem?" He snapped, sitting up and tossing the blanket away to grab a random jumper.
"Oi that's mine," said James, laughing and snatching it off Sirius.
"My problem," said Peter obviously unaware that the question was rhetorical. "Is that you two have been acting weird around me ever since I got punched by that weirdo,". Sirius was ready to defend Remus the way he had been to James over the course of the week but James got there first.
"Well that's half the problem isn't it. You don't even see what you've done wrong, Pete, clearly you've upset him and all you've done is cry about it instead of even beginning to think of apologising,". Peter was taken aback. Sirius wondered if this was the first time James had taken this tone with the small boy but judging by his reaction, he assumed it was.
"Well if that's what your think," grumbled Peter, snatching his tie of his bed and heading for the door. "I'm going for breakfast,". James watched him go, a guilty look on his face.
"Ignore him, James, you were right about it all anyway," said Sirius, standing and beginning to pull on his uniform. He was grateful to his past self that he'd showered the night before.
"Yeah but... maybe Lupin shouldn't of punched him...".
"James!" Sirius cried, zipping up his trousers.
"Hey why don't you talk to him," suggested James. "Lupin might tell you what's going on cause your on his side,".
"What and your not?" Asked Sirius, buttoning his shirt.
"I'm not picking sides, Sirius, they're both my friends," said James with a sigh, Sirius rolled his eyes but decided not to bother. They'd had this conversation already about how Sirius thought Peter was completely in the wrong for prying and treating Remus like he was different and though James had agreed, he didn't think Remus' violence was necessary at all.
Remus Lupin was, admittedly, a bit different to the other 3 boys partly because he was raised by a muggle mother who he said "distanced herself from him after his father died" and therefore was lacking emotional care and feeling for anything and anyone including himself, and partly because he has 0 to no etiquette and solved almost everything with a sick punch that had already resulted in Snape having a broken nose twice this month.
But Sirius liked that about him. He liked being friends with someone so different to the normal pure blood idiots he had grown up around. He liked someone so devoid of emotions and empathy that Sirius could say anything around him and he wouldn't bat an eyelid (besides the time Sirius had told him about his mother vanishing his hair).
"Alright fine, I'll talk to him, I'm pretty sure he should be at breakfast still,".

"Morning all," said James, grinning from ear to ear as he and Sirius took their usual seats at the table: Sirius opposite Remus and James opposite Peter.
Peter shot a glare at James and Remus didn't even flinch.
"Tough crowd," muttered Sirius, elbowing James who began to laugh. Remus snorted.
"I'm shocked you know such a muggle phrase," he said, taking James' toast and taking a rather glorious bite. James and Sirius stared at each other. Remus spoke to them! For the first time all week!
"Now now Remus, there's no need to be so cruel," said James, smirking. Remus shrugged.
"'S what I do innit,". Sirius didn't miss the glare he gave Peter as he stood. "Anyway, I'm going to charms,".
"I'll come!" Said Sirius, seeing an opportunity to speak to him as James had asked.
"Must you?" Remus commented flatly. "You haven't even eaten,". Sirius nodded, snatching a bacon sandwich,, unphased by Remus' demeanour.
"I'll eat on the way stop fussing,". Remus snorted but didn't continue protest when Sirius followed him.
They walked in silence for a bit, Sirius eating his sandwich and Remus flipping through a book though he clearly wasn't reading it. In fact, Sirius didn't know if he'd ever seen Remus read.
Sirius cleared his throat and Remus looked at him.
"What?".
"You know, I'd understand if you were ignoring Peter but me and James haven't actually done anything wrong,".
"Not yet,".
"What do you mean?" Asked Sirius.
"Everyone thinks I... I'm... a monster. Or weird. Or thick. Or-".
"I don't!" Sirius cried, grabbing Remus' arm. Remus winced and shook Sirius off. Sirius suddenly remembered the scars he'd seen on his arm on the evening they'd done their first prank. Sirius frowned and took his wrist instead.
"I don't want your pity, Black-,".
"-Is it the scars?" He asked. Remus glared at him.
"Wouldn't you like to know," he said, coldly, snatching his wrist away. Sirius smiled.
"We all have scars, Remus, you can't allow them to define you," he said. Remus raised his eyebrows, an odd look in his eyes.
"Well mine do and Peters made that very clear,".
"Peter doesn't know what he's talking about! He's had life so easy Remus, he doesn't understand pain,". Sirius didn't even realise what he'd said until Remus stopped walking.
"Pain?" He said, slowly. Sirius nodded, focusing on the way Remus' lips quirked down into a little frown.
"Is that what your nightmares are about? Pain?". Sirius put his hands in his pockets, not liking where this conversation was going.
"That's not the point, Remus, we're talking about you not me,". They were silent for a bit before Remus spoke again.
"Sorry,".
"Hm?".
"For ignoring you and James... And for your nightmares. And for punching Peter,". Sirius grinned.
"Apology accepted," he said. "But for the nightmares - it's not your fault,". Remus smiled.
"No, but Peter told me I should stop being such an emotionless billywig," he said. Sirius laughed.
"I like you just the way you are, but it wouldn't hurt to empathise a little more,". Remus shrugged and they were silent again. Sirius liked walking with Remus. He was calming and seemed to get when Sirius didn't want to talk about something anymore. Like when he mentioned Sirius' nightmares, instead of digging deeper, he'd just apologised.
Remus Lupin wasn't dangerous and nothing could change his mind about that.
