Chapter 12
(Hugo POV)
Sofia began to stir, I got closer to her and grabbed her hand. She began to settle before her eyes fluttered open, "Hugo" she sighted. "Hey Sof, you feeling better." She nodded before pushing herself upright, "How long was I out?" "A couple of hours, it's night now." She looked out toward her window and saw what I said was true. She nodded when she saw the night sky. "I missed it," she softly spoke, "the light, the sky. It was so dark down there." I thought back on my few days down there and she was right. The only light came from candles that were lit and she had been trapped there for a week. I looked down and saw her hand in mine as she squeezed mine. I gave her hand a soft squeeze back and smiled.
"Hugo," she began talking again and I looked over at her as she looked back up at me, "Yeah Sof." "Thanks for coming for me, I didn't think I would ever get out of there." Defeat came across her face. "Sofia, I am never giving up on you. I need you to know that. I love you too much to let you go." She moved across her bed and pulled me down to lay next to her. She snuggled into my side as I held her. "I don't know why?" she said into my chest. "Why what?" "Why I am so important to you. I deserved what happened, it was my ancestors fault and I am not even a real princess," she whispered. This was the second time I heard Sofia say this and now it was getting on my nerves that this is how she saw herself. "Hey, one your ancestors mistakes are not yours and it is not up to you to atone to them. It was not your fault and you didn't deserve what happened to you." She looked uneasy before she nodded against my chest agreeing with me, "Second of all you are a real princess." She lifted her head up and looked at me wide eyed, "I'm really not. My mom marrying the king doesn't mean I am a princess, despite the crown, jewels and all the other stuff that came with it. I abandoned my kingdom and I didn't come back when they needed me despite everyone asking me to. I abandoned my people, my friends, my family, you. So no, I am not a real princess and you really can't convince me otherwise." I didn't know that Sofia carried around all this guilt. She pulled herself out of the bed and stood up and I went next to her worried that she might not be 100% quite yet.
"Sofia," I grabbed her shoulders, "You are a real princess. You didn't abandon anyone, you made a decision that would protect the most amount of people and do the least harm. You were diplomatic in your choice and even if some people were hurt along the way it doesn't mean it wasn't the right thing to do. We aren't kids anymore, the world isn't black and white anymore. Just because some people were unhappy doesn't mean it was the wrong thing to do. You didn't abandon your subjects you just had a lot more to take care of." Her eyes didn't leave mine the entire time I spoke, she took a step forward closing the gap in between the two of us. She wrapped her arms around my neck and pulled me into an embrace. "Thank you," she whispered in my ear. I nodded as I held her, "I love you." She said before letting me go. I wanted to kiss her so badly but, that wasn't what she needed right now, especially after what Prince Cole had done to her. I kept gazing upon her as we stood in a comfortable silence until we heard a knock on the door.
James came through the door, "Sofia you're awake." She ran to him and gave him a hug. He smiled as he held her for a moment before putting her down on the ground. "I hate to cut this short but, Mom, Dad, Amber and Desmond need you two."
(Sofia POV)
Hugo held my arm keeping me steady and James walked ahead of us guiding us to the throne room. As the door opened tears came to my eyes as I saw the rest of my family waiting for me, "Sofia." Mom said coming towards me. Hugo let go of my arm and she wrapped her arms around me and I held onto her. Dad wrapped his arms around the both of us. James and Amber also joined and it was nice family moment. I needed it after what had happened. We had let each other go and I turned back to Hugo who was smiling at me. I needed him now more than I ever had before and I had a feeling he wasn't going to let me out of his sight for a while. Not that I minded. I looked back at my family while my fingers interlocked with Hugo's hand.
