Chapter 17

I scream, but then realize who it is.

"What are you doing here?" I ask.

"I came to apologize," he says sincerely.

"Jesse, it's too late to apologize. I like you and all, but I saw you sucking the face of a snobby waitress. I just can't be with someone that will cheat on me," I look Jesse straight in the face.

"Samantha, I really like you, too-"

I snort,"Should've figured that out before you stuck your tongue down Emily's throat."

"Samantha, I swear-"

"Better not."

"Samantha, just listen," I surprisingly stayed calm through all of that.

"Listening."

"After she spilt your Dr. Pepper on you, and you ran off, she tried to sit beside me. I pushed her away. But she kept doing it. I let her sit. Then she kissed me. I tried to pull her hair to get her away, but then you showed up. I'm so sorry. Can you forgive me?" He asks.

I sigh,"No, I can't Jesse. I'm sorry. I think it's time for you to leave."

"Ok," he looks like he's about to cry. The stalker leaves my room and I lie in bed. Thinking about all the good times me and Bryson had. Key word: had. I miss him. Not as a boyfriend, but as a friend. A best friend.

Finally, after what feels like eternity, I drift off into a light sleep.

I grab my mask, glove and rosin, heading towards the pitching circle. I pitch the ball and it goes into the glove instantly. Since our catcher is young, the ball falls to the ground. I sigh.

We can't change catchers because she is our second string catcher. Our first string is out with a broken leg.

I pitch a few more, and on the last one she throws down. Becca catches it and tags the imaginary base runner.

Becca tosses it to Kenli, Kenli tosses it to Ashlyn, Ashlyn to Miranda, and Miranda hands it to me.

The first pitch I threw was a strike. And then another strike. I throw my very well known change up. I strike her out. Then a girl hits it right over my head. Kenli and Becca both dive and miss it. Baylynn recovers it and throws it to the now on her feet Becca.

The first pitch on the number four batter looked like a strike, even though the umpire called it a ball. The next pitch she hit. It was a very solid hit. I run in between third and home. Baylynn gets the ball and throws it to home. Natalie catches it and blocks the plate. The runner was a few feet away from her. She tries to dive over her, and fails. Natalie puts a tag on her, but something horrible happens. The batter collides head first into Natalie's helmet.

Natalie lies there, unconscious, and the batter is slowly taking off her helmet to get a drink from the water bottle her coach brought her. Our coaches are surrounding Natalie, while we sit stunned on one knee. The ambulance finally arrives. They take Natalie off the field on a stretcher, and the coach waves towards our dugout. Keeley comes out with a mask and a glove. He takes the ball from me.

"Sam, you're catching. Go get the spare gear on," he says.
