When Mordecai stepped on the brakes of the Cadillac, the engine roared and he, Esther, Rose, Freckle, Ivy and Rocky. Freckle was in the front, considering his marksmanship. He seemed much more nervous than usual.
"Why aren't the Savoys coming?" Ivy asked finally. She gripped onto the cushions, eyes wide as Mordecai swerved violently, flooring it completely. He checked the rearview mirrors, eyes narrowing.
"This is Lackadaisy business." He replied simply.
"Then why are your sisters here?" Rocky cut in.
"They insisted." Mordecai put simply, rolling his eyes.
"Hi, hello!" Rose grinned brightly.
"Why the hell did you switch from one gang to another?" Esther, meanwhile, frowned.
"It's a complicated story: I do not have the time or the capacity to do so." Mordecai replied. He took a sharp right, gripping the wheel tightly.
"Did you meet any lucky ladies?" Rose then teased. Mordecai groaned.
"No, Esther, I didn't." He growled out.
"He found a dramatic ragamuffin!" Ivy exclaimed, teasing. "In fact, he's next to you!" She directed Esther and Rose to Rocky.
"How d'ya do, miladies?" Rocky took off his hat and bow slightly.
"Miss Pepper," Mordecai growled, watching Ivy's smug grin from the rearview mirror. His eyes went wide upon noticing how Rose handed Esther a five dollar bill. "Wh–Rose, Esther!" His face flushed red, and his ears flattened.
"C'mon Mordecai: you? With a lady?" Esther urged, the corners of her mouth tugging up.
"It is not about the sex of the person: it is about the connection." Mordecai corrected. "...if I'm being quite frank, I wouldn't have seen myself in this position ever."
"With your little boy toy?" Esther teased.
"The way you're implying that phrase is downright venereal." Mordecai sighed. "I am not, I repeat," he began to emphasize his next words, "I am not desiring intercourse from anyone. It is disgusting, foul, and only made for providing offspring."
"...people have sex for passion, not just having kids." Ivy deadpanned. Mordecai went silent.
"They do?" He blurted out.
"For Christ's sake," Esther facepalmed, "Mordecai, I cannot believe we're having this conversation."
"You started it!" Mordecai scoffed.
"Hey, hey, let's keep it civil!" Rocky exclaimed with a chuckle. Mordecai reluctantly stopped, and looked at Freckle from the side.
"Freckle," He began, "I suggest you get the ammo ready. We are unable to predict how this'll play out."
"Oh, uhh..." Freckle blinked, then looked down at his feet. He slowly picked up the gun case, his hands shaking slightly.
"...hey," Mordecai softened his voice, "believe me: I understand this is nerve wracking. Though I strongly think you're going to do amazingly."
Freckle straightened up, his eyes sparking. He gave a nod of determination, readying his weapon. He jerked when Mordecai stopped the Cadillac so roughly. He took off his seatbelt and then reached into his coat with one hand, taking out the keys from the car and storming out. He looked over his shoulder and raised his gun slightly. He nodded once, twice, an indicator of readiness.
"Now or never." He told them. "Esther, Rose—"
"—we're going in with you." Esther held her hand up. "Besides, I got this." She pulled her pant leg and revealed a small pistol strapped to it. Rose's eyes sparked, and Mordecai's jaw dropped.
