She kept her head low, and ducked behind a crate, and waited until the police cars passed by. That was close. They were actually searching for her. She was supposed to be in her fathers mansion atop the hill. She wasn't supposed to be in the low lying poverty ridden city known to the rich as the 'Dump'. But here she was. She hated the system of segregation. It wasn't fair. The least she could do was help. And it's not easy when her father a.k.a the Sulthan of Riches sends police cars to find her. He said, " It's a dangerous world down there. People will do whatever for money. Stay here. It's safer. " Uh, no thanks dad.
She continued walking along the run- down streets, and came to a stop near a corner shop. Through the display windows, she saw a doll. A beautiful doll, with piercing blue eyes and a gorgeous mane of silky black hair. It had red lips and pearl white skin. That is so pretty! On impulse, she walked into the store. The little bell jingled, and she took in the smell of the walls. Walking up to the counter, she saw an old lady, reading a small, torn book." Hullo miss. " Akira smiled kindly.
" Pick what you want and leave. " the lady said rudely. Akira shrugged. She was used to people in the Dump being rude. She couldn't hold them against it. The rich were always mean to them. She walked to the window and held the doll precariously. Smiling, she went back to the counter and placed the doll before the old lady." That'll be 15 dollars. "
Akira generously handed her a 20 dollar bill. The women looked up." Keep the change, miss. " Akira said sweetly and headed out the door.
After a few minutes of walking, she thought she felt a slight drizzle. Ugh. Everyone started rushing home. Their tattered clothes were already wet, as they ducked into shabby cottages and almost collapsed houses. She instantly felt sorry for them. Just then, a little boy crossed her path, limping and coughing and sputtering. Oh dear. Poor thing. She stopped him, and he turned to look at her. His eyes were sickly and his pale. She worriedly checked his temperature and found it burning.
" Oh my dear poor thing! " she exclaimed and took off her fluffy leather parka, wrapping it around his skiny bones. He was shivering pitifully.
He looked at her, and said, " I-I can't-" he broke off in a fit of coughs. " Can't take this ma'am. " he managed, before he collapsed in a fit of hacking cough, that soon turned to blood. Akira picked him up steadily, worried. He must have a disease. Although she wanted so badly to take him home with her and have him treated, she knew she would be putting him in more trouble. His father would never allow someone from the Dump into their house, and probably have the poor kid stoned in public. I want to stone my father, she thought angrily. Instead, she handed him a hundred dollar bill. He looked at her in awe.
" Miss- Can't take it. No. " he tried to object, but she shoved it into his hands."Get yourself treated, alright, chai?" She asked firmly.
He nodded his head slightly, too tired to argue." C'mon. Let's get you home. "
The drizzle turned into a heavy rain, as she picked him up, still coughing, and headed down the street. He weakly gave her directions, and she had to stop once or twice in the middle to let him vomit. There must be someone at home to help him. She navigated through a part of town that she had never been through before. With the boys faint voice showing her the way, she managed to reach his 'home' just as the thunder started booming, and the rain became more violent. It wasn't much of a house to see. Just a door, and the rest of the house was underground, she figured. The mud around the door was beginning to slide off, and she quickly walked to the door and knocked. No reply. Wrapping the boy in a warm cacoon, she knocked again. This time the door opened. A young guy, about her age answered. She gasped. The guy had bruises on his neck, and the corner of his mouth was bleeding. One of his eyes was black, and he seemed to be in the middle of washing blood off his face. He gaped when he saw her, and then seemed to notice the little boy.
