Summary:
Enid and Wednesday celebrate New Year's Eve (but 3 years later).Enid hates fireworks.
Her brothers loved them though, and every year on New Year's Eve they'd set off handfuls of them, lighting up the neighborhood and almost setting everything on fire while their mother wouldn't even bat an eye.
They were always so loud and bright and would go off without warning, scaring poor Enid so much she'd stay cooped up inside of her room instead of having fun like she wanted to.
And Wednesday hates celebrating things. She hates the cheeriness and having to talk to everyone and act like she cares when in reality she'd rather be doing something else with her time than participating in meaningless traditions.
So that's why neither of them have a problem flying out of Paris on New Year's Eve. Except their flight is delayed because there's a snowstorm back in New York, and Enid just laughs at the irony.
A blizzard delaying her flight is how she met Wednesday.
Enid still thinks the whole thing was lifted from some Hallmark channel romantic comedy she'd watch alone on her couch after drinking a whole bottle of wine. Wednesday's the total opposite of her, from looks to personality to everything in between, but for some reason the two of them just seemed to click.
Wednesday lets Enid go through her drafts and doodle on them with glitter pen. Enid lets Wednesday dye her hair every color of the rainbow. Wednesday keeps Enid in check. Enid helps Wednesday break out of her shell.
At least this time, the delay only lasts a few hours, and Enid's phone stays perfectly charged (Wednesday had bought her a portable charger their first week in Paris), and soon the two of them are on the plane back to New York and back to their routine.
Wednesday will take the window seat so nobody bothers her, shutting the window shade right away. Enid takes the aisle and puts a movie on immediately, not even finishing it because she falls asleep as soon as they're done eating. She won't wake up until the wheels hit the ground at their destination, or if Wednesday has to scold her for snoring too loud.
But this time is different. Enid stays awake the whole flight.
She can't sit still, getting up to walk up and down the aisle so much she's going to wear the floors down. Then she'll start a movie, watch five minutes of it, and then pick another one, until she's gone through all of them. And then she'll try to read, or do a puzzle, but her attempts at that don't last long either.
Wednesday only has one idea left to get Enid to calm down. She drops a copy of her latest draft on Enid's tray table and digs a glitter pen out of Enid's bag.
Wednesday would never tell anyone that she lets Enid go through her work and edit it. It's nothing official, just her own thoughts and opinions along with hearts and smiley faces drawn in the corner.
Wednesday would also never tell anyone that she ends up listening to a lot of Enid's suggestions and makes the changes to her writing.
But when Enid comes back from the bathroom for the millionth time, she only gets through one page before giving up and slinking back into her seat and staring up at the ceiling.
Wednesday finally asks her what's wrong, but Enid just blames it on the coffee they had at the airport. But Wednesday knows Enid better than that. She's nervous.
Maybe it's the big meeting she has coming up with. Who is it - that company - Tik Tok? Yoko's birthday is coming up and she's still trying to organize that. Or, maybe it's because the 49ers need to win their next game so they'll have a spot in the playoffs. Wednesday's never understood how football works no matter how many times Enid's explained it to her.
