Summary:
Somehow, a blizzard delaying Enid's flight home for Christmas turns out to be a good thing.December 24th
11:55amEnid is going to be late.
It's not her fault New York traffic always sucks and the crappy weather is making it hard to get around the city and she decided not to pack for this trip until last night.
Okay, so maybe it is kind of her fault that she's going to be late for her flight, but it's not like she's going to be too upset if she misses it.
She hasn't been home since sophomore year of college, which was ages ago. Well, not exactly ages, she only graduated a few years ago, but it certainly feels like forever. Her mom's just been nagging her to come home and visit for the holidays for years now, but she's never been bothered to go. Mostly because her mom is just going to complain about how she should get a real job and criticize her fashion choices and ask her about her love life over and over again.
But her oldest brother is engaged and is supposed to be bringing his fiancé over this year, and she figures if she goes now and gets a visit over with she should be in the clear for the next couple of years. So she makes an excuse that she can't fly out until Christmas Eve and has to leave before New Years so she doesn't have to stay too long.
It's freezing out, and the snow is blowing in her face as she grabs her luggage and tips the taxi driver extra for driving in this mess. Inside is just as crowded, and she can see all over the screens that dozens of flights are getting canceled. Then her eyes glance to the time and she remembers that she's running late and she rushes over through security, squeezing through the crowds to get to her gate.
As she weaves her way through everyone, she bumps into a woman on the concourse who quickly turns around to give Enid the darkest stare of death she's ever seen in her life, and Enid mutters a sorry before she can respond and runs off to her gate.
She sees the screen, bright and red and blaring.
FLIGHT 503 TO SAN FRANCISCO
DELAYEDShe can't be that surprised though, there's a literal blizzard swirling around outside so bad all she sees outside of the windows is white. She should be thankful it's only delayed and not canceled. Her only problem now is finding a place to charge her phone in an airport absolutely packed with people.
December 24th
3:42pmEnid's holed up against the wall across from her gate sitting between a crying baby and a sleeping teenanger who keeps drooling onto her shoulder. Her phone battery is dwindling as she tries her best to stay off of it, but her mom keeps texting her and asking for updates that she doesn't have, complaining about how she's going to have to leave dinner to get her from the airport when her flight comes in late.
She knows the universe is telling her not to fly home for the holidays, that maybe she should just stay here again, and so if by some miracle this snowstorm stops, she wonders if she should get on the plane at all.
Enid sighs and tucks her phone into her pocket. She supposes she could sleep too, but it's just so loud and bright here and she could never fall asleep in public with people watching her. She digs through her bag and pulls out a book.
The Raven and the Wolf
by W.F. AddamsHer friend Yoko had recommended it to her, constantly asking her if she's read it yet every moment she got. Enid hated murder mysteries because they always grossed her out, but Yoko had a pretty good taste in books and it was all over her Twitter timeline, so she figured she'd try and read on it on her flight and see what all the hype was about.
