"What a child with such eyes," Bakugou thought.
It was different from the depression of the abused children he had seen in that facility, but it was also different from the children growing up like stray dogs in the slums. The nine-year-old Shouto Todoroki was looking up at him with eyes of different colors that were hard to describe.
It looked like he was doubting him, like he was making fun of him, and at the same time, he looked like he was clinging to him. It might just be Bakugou's imagination, or he might just be biased because he'd heard about the unusual coloration and the origin of the burn covering his left eye.
A veteran man in charge of the bodyguards, including Bakugou, told him that he had a scar where his deranged mother poured boiling water on him. He was told that all he had to do was pick him up and drop him off as per shift and leave the subject of his mother and burns untouched. He was also told that Shouto was the most difficult child. When he asked him how, he was at a loss for words. He just told him that he was not a handful and that he didn't need to interact with him more than necessary, a coping mechanism that he didn't really understand.
As the man said, the children of the Todoroki family, including Shouto, were not particularly well cared for. If they were to be taken care of in the name of personal protection, it would be superfluous to say that only one maid was also stationed at the house at all times. Indeed, Bakugou had volunteered for this job with the intention of protecting someone. However, although he was apprehensive about babysitting, it did not seem necessary for him to take care of the children.
However, Shouto seemed to really like what he did to him on the first day, and whenever he found Bakugou, his glass bead-like eyes sparkled with interest. This was quickly brought to the attention of Todoroki Enji, who told Bakugou to raise him as strictly as he could.
Sometimes, when he saw Shouto in pain with bruises, he felt hatred toward Shouto's father, who was his employer. Raising one's hand against such a tender child is definitely evil. However, as soon as you feel this way about your employer, you should either break it off or quit the job. Yes, even though he knew this, Bakugou could not leave because of what Chiyo and the eldest daughter Fuyumi told him.
Shouto seems happy when he sees you.
He wondered if there was ever a happy time for a child named Shouto Todoroki. In the first place, it is unclear whether he feels happy or enjoys spending time with himself. He laughs at the kid who gets wheezy from doing grapples or running around, and makes fun of him whenever he makes a careless mistake in his studies. Whenever he's with him, Shouto always gets angry or pokes at him. He thought there was something amusing about him, but he did sometimes feel like he was a puppet when he saw him from a distance.
He doesn't know if "puppet" is the right word. He has a will. He would give a cold look and talk back to anyone whose attitude he didn't like, even if they were adults. That said, he never saw him trying to spend time with the kind Chiyo or his sister on his own, and in the end, Shouto seemed to be a complete person on his own, even as a child.
Bakugou had always been unable to put a name to the feelings that arose within him when he spent time with Shouto. It might be pity. It is similar to toothache. It cannot be salvaged. Shouto is struggling to stay where he is. He's sure he will become a decent person. He is closed, but not distorted. But he can't take his eyes off him.
He also knew that it was not his place to rebel against Todoroki's parenting style. On several occasions, he had been attacked while accompanying Enji on his work. Once, when he came across a guerrilla conflict outside of Japan, he saw a small child running out of control with a machine gun in his hand, and he looked around the once-advanced country, and Enji said that Japan might eventually see such an era. When Bakugou remained silent, he let out a groan of anger, half to himself, saying that the children must be able to defend themselves.
The way he did it might be wrong, but Bakugou knew that what this father was wishing for might not be wrong. Although he could neither forgive nor agree, Bakugou, who has seen many situations in Japan where the crime rate has exceeded 30, could easily understand his wish.
He doesn't know whether Shouto knew about his father's wish or not, but he has become remarkably strong, perhaps even driven by frustration and irritation. Personally, he thought that he would continue to work as Enji's personal security and protect him, just like the rest of them, and that he would one day follow in his father's footsteps.
Bakugou started the engine of his car as he saw the scheduled train pull into the platform. Stepping out of the ticket gate, people are blowing in puddles and looking fed up with the rain that is pouring down like a waterfall. He turned the car slowly in that direction.
For some reason, the tall man with the cap on his head stands out even though his red and white hair is hidden. He ran straight up to him without an umbrella on his big feet, and he unlocked the lock.
When he opened the door, the sound of rain that was hitting against the surface of the car like a machine gun could be heard, and a tall man, soaking wet, was squeezed into the passenger seat. The door slams shut, shutting out the sound. Bakugou glanced in his side mirror, turned on his signal, and stepped on the gas pedal.
