"Flight practice is canceled!" My flight commander announced. "A massive storm is brewing outside, maybe even hurricane weather." I felt a tad disappointed, since flight practice was generally one of my favorite activities.

From across the field I spotted Ridoc, and once formation was completed he headed to me. We hadn't talked much in the past week, just a couple glances in the corridors or polite waves.

"Hey," I greeted. "How's it going?"

"Great, thanks. You?"

"Alright. It's too bad practice was canceled today, I was itching to get out."

Ridoc grinned mischievously. "Who says we still can't get out? Wanna break into the archives with me?"

"The archives?" I questioned, "Isn't that a little... boring?"

"We can move all the scrolls around so that the scribes have a hissy fit when they try to find them."

"And if we're caught?"

"We won't," He assured me. "Worst case scenario we get trapped inside and when the doors shut we're dead."

"No risk at all, then." I giggled. "Sure, why not?"

Both of us took a quick glance around to ensure nobody had been listening. We then headed to the scribe quadrant tower, and approached the massive vault leading into the room.

I tried the vault, "I think it's locked."

"That's what friends are for," He smirked. Sawyer appeared, with perfect timing, and a girl at his side wearing a cream-colored robe. Scribe, I presumed.

"Hello," She signed. "You wanted in to the archive room?"

"Yes," Ridoc signed back. He wasn't fluent in sign, but knew enough to hold a steady conversation. "Just for a little fun."

"You have to promise not to make a mess of the place," The girl replied. "Last time I had a lot of explaining to do."

"Sorry about that Jesinia," He finger-spelled her name. "It won't happen again."

"It definitely will," Sawyer said both aloud and in sign. Although, I noticed, instead of the word 'it' he accidently signed 'yes.'

Jesinia unlocked the vault with her key, and the four of us entered. Inside there were shelves and shelves full of journals, scrolls, and books. Tables littered the ground, and from the corner of my eye I spotted a suspcious scribe. He stared signing to Jesinia, but she signed back and he quickly walked away.

"What was all that about?" I whispered. I hadn't caught what she said.

"Something about a washroom incident. I don't think he'll be any trouble."

Me and Ridoc split from Sawyer and Jesinia to the back corner of the archives, where we sat cross-legged on some pillows.

"Romantic," I said.

"It gets better." He casually wrapped his left arm around my shoulders like a scarf. "Now you aren't cold anymore."

"I ever said I was," I laughed. "But I appreciate the sentiment." I rested my head on his shoulder, and breathed in the smell of worn books. I couldn't ever picture myself being a scribe, it just seemed so unexciting. What did they even do all day? Sit around translating and talking about brunch? Where was the danger, the threat of death constantly tiptoeing around you until it finally decides to strike?

"I don't usually go after first years," Ridoc commented. "But you definitely caught my attention with the way you came sailing in during threshing."

"Gharn is definitely large," I replied. "He actually ate one of the others before choosing me. I'm glad to be worthy."

"No funny business," Gharn used his bond to say through my head. "I know the second-years dragon. Do not, I repeat, do NOT get involved with him. It will end in heartbreak come graduation." I shoved my shields in place and ignored his warning.

"So, Ridoc, how about we move some books?"
