The sight of Rhiannon's lifeless form sent a wave of shock and horror coursing through me, paralyzing me momentarily. I stumbled backwards, processing. Rhiannon, my twin sister, lay motionless on the ground, dead.

This couldn't be happening. Why had Xaden killed her? I knew her like the back of my hand, it wasn't possible! It couldn't be possible she was an assassin, or a, or a...

Was Xaden the enemy?

Yet, as I struggled to make sense of the chaos unfolding around me, doubts and suspicions crept into my mind. Had Xaden truly been responsible for Rhiannon's death? Could he have betrayed us, his own comrades, in such a heinous manner?

With no time to think, I raced for the flight field where dragons were already taking off into the midnight sky. Basgaith was in chaos, the school erupting with traitors and supporters, leaders and followers.

I had to find Xaden, perhaps my thinking about Sgaeyl had been some sort of premonition. Whatever the case, I'd find out the truth, and if I had to, kill Xaden.

I hopped onto Orion, steam coming out of his nostrils. "Find him," I silently commanded. Wordlessly he flapped into the air without even a running start. A growl rumbled in his throat, and my hand was on my sword the entire time. My flight leathers were half put-on, and my throat felt as dry as a desert. I spotted two dragons fighting in the distance, but with no way of knowing which was the enemy I carried on. Who could betray Basgaith for griffons? Who would dare do such a thing?
As Orion soared through the night sky, I gripped his scales tightly, my mind consumed by a maelstrom of conflicting emotions. The chaos and confusion of Basgaith's betrayal weighed heavily upon me, but amidst the turmoil, one thought burned brightly in my mind: I had to find Xaden.

Below, we passed over trees and fields, over flocks of tempting sheep. Orion caught the scent of Sgaeyl, and he followed. "We'll have them yet, Y/n. I will claw Sgaeyl apart for bringing you into this!"

"Bringing me into what?" I questioned, but Orion fell silent.

Sgaeyl was faster than us, as she was a bigger dragon. On the horizon we spotted that she'd stopped, and we quickly gained distance to approach her and Xaden.

"Wingleader Riorson!" I shouted, the words feeling foul coming out of my mouth. "You killed my sister!"

He smoothed back his black hair, an unreadable expression on his face. "Is that really what you believe?"

"I-" I stuttered, "I'm not really sure what to believe."

"Do you really think griffons could orchestrate something like this?" He asked. "No disrespect to them, but they would never be able to breach the wards."

"So if it's not griffons, what could it possibly be?"

Sgaeyl's scales glinted from the starry light. Xaden exhaled, and then replied, "Venin. Venin did this."

"The hell? What are Venin?"

"They're kind of like us, but they are corrupted by greed and the thirst for power." He said smoothly, "Navarre is refusing to help defend Griffon Riders, so me and the other marked ones gather to discuss and help the other kingdoms on the continent from the Venin, which are truthfully for the most part our own."

"But why would Griffons attack?"

"They wouldn't," He snapped sharply. "All of those people back there are Venin, who have disguised themselves to cover their blood-red eyes. Even your sister can be turned, Y/n, and if you can't be sure it's better safe than sorry."

"This is crazy! It's impossible!"

"Do you have a better explanation for what happened back there?"

"Well... no."

"Exactly," He said. A few other marked ones came up from the forest below. I recognized two of them, Rhinannon and Bodhi. After another glance, I saw Garrick as well.

"I thought groups of more than three marked ones couldn't gather together."

"They can if they'd like to. General Melgren's power is useless, she can't accurately predict the future if we're gathered together. She'd want to stop us assisting the other kingdoms for fear that our own would fall. But I believe we can change the outcome."

As Xaden's words sank in, my mind reeled with disbelief. Venin, corrupted beings driven by greed and thirst for power, had infiltrated our ranks and orchestrated Rhiannon's death. The thought was almost too much to bear, but I knew that I had to stay strong, to face the truth no matter how painful it may be.

"But why would Venin target Basgaith?" I asked, struggling to comprehend the enormity of the situation. "And why would they go to such lengths to deceive us?"

Xaden's expression darkened, his eyes flashing with a mixture of anger and determination. "Venin will stop at nothing to achieve their goals, even if it means sacrificing innocent lives. They see Basgaith as a threat, a beacon of hope in a world consumed by darkness. And they will do whatever it takes to extinguish that light."

"What would you like me to do?" I asked firmly.

"Follow me, follow us. I can bring you to the Riorson house where you'll be safe, and maybe, just maybe we can save Navarre and the rest of the continent.

"Is this a trap?"

"What do your instincts tell you?"

"That... that I should follow you."

"Then I'd think it'd be best if you followed them."
