In this AU Xaden doesn't exist, for obvious reasons :)

"Shit, she's good," Y/n muttered under their breath. Violet was double-wielding daggers, trying to get into position to perfectly flick them towards Y/n. Violet watched them steadily as they caught their breath, gripping an iron sword.
Out of nowhere, she raced towards Y/n rather than doing her typical throwing move. Y/n panicked and dodged the attack, only to trip over air and go tumbling to the ground. Violet reacted and slammed her knee against Y/n's back, putting the fellow rider into a headlock. Y/n tapped out after a few seconds, their pride hurt.
"Nice try," The brown-and-silver haired girl smirked, releasing Y/n from the headlock and standing up. Y/n groaned, rubbing their neck as they sat up. Violet extended a hand, helping them to their feet. "You're getting better," she said, though there was teasing in her voice.
Y/n dusted themselves off, trying to regain some semblance of dignity. "You're not making it easy," they replied, sheathing their sword. Her eyes sparkled with amusement as she twirled one of her daggers skillfully.
"Wouldn't be any fun if I did," she said with a wink. Y/n couldn't help but smile back. She was more than just a skilled fighter; she was a force to be reckoned with. And Y/n was determined to one day match her prowess.Later on that day, Y/n headed to the flight field. As a second-year, Y/n naturally had a dragon. Opal lifted her head, her one eye blinking lazily. "Is that a bruise?" There was amusement in her tone as her voice echoed through Y/n's mind.
"Erm, yes," Y/n said aloud. "Don't worry it's nothing."
"Are you sure it has nothing to do with your training with a certain Sorrengail?"
"Of course not!" Y/n shouted, and a few other riders glanced in their direction. They quickly lowered their voice and gently rubbed Opal's horns. "Sorry for shouting."
She chuffed, "You lack control. That's why she's always able to defeat you in battle. You must be patient."
"Right, yeah, of course." Y/n padded over to her side and swiftly mounted her. In bright sunlight, her green scales almost reflected white; especially the newer ones.
Without warning, Opal took to the air. Today they would be practicing aerial maneuvers, much to both of their delight. Y/n held onto her neck tightly, the wind whipping through their hair and over her scales as they flew. Like an acrobat or some sort of air gymnast, Opal did a nose-dive into a double spin. She might be half-blind, but she was an excellent dragon.
After a few thrilling minutes, Opal leveled out and they soared high above the training grounds. The exhilaration of flying was unmatched, and Y/n scanned the horizon, their thoughts drifting back to Violet. She was relentless in training, and as much as it stung Y/n's pride, they knew she was pushing them to be better.
"Opal, do you think I'll ever be able to beat her?" Y/n asked, their voice barely a whisper against the rushing wind.
"With time and patience, perhaps," Opal responded, her tone thoughtful. "But you must find your own strength, not just aim to surpass hers." Her words echoed in Y/n's mind as they continued their flight. Opal was right.
When they finally landed, Y/n dismounted and gave Opal an affectionate pat on the bridge of her nose. "Thanks, Opal. I needed that." She snorted, a plume of smoke curling from her nostrils. "You always do. Now, go. Train hard, but remember to rest." Y/n nodded and headed back to the training grounds. The overprotective dragon headed towards the sheep fields.
As they approached the training arena, they saw Violet practicing her dagger throws, each one hitting the target with pinpoint accuracy. Y/n let out a shaky breath and approached her. If looks could kill, Y/n was already dead. Butterflies churned in their stomach, but they pushed it aside. Most likely the anxiety; they didn't want to accidentally end up dead during training.
They watched as Violet elegantly hit the practice dummies, splitting and cracking the wood. Her brown hair, which faded to silver at the ends, flipped this way and that. Sure, it was in a braid, but it was still long. Y/n liked long hair, and it was rare to see it at Basgaith.
"Hey," they scratched the back of their neck awkwardly. "Wanna train?"
She turned around. "I'm a little busy right now. Are you sure you want to get your ass kicked by me again? I don't really have the time." But amusement glimmered in her eyes.
Y/n sighed, "I would actually love one of those from you right now."
She raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. "Really? You must enjoy pain more than I thought," she teased, but there was a hint of warmth in her voice. "What are you, a masochist?"
Violet tossed one of her daggers into the air, catching it effortlessly as she sauntered over to Y/n. They rolled their eyes, "Maybe I am," they replied with a grin. "Or maybe I'm just determined to finally get the upper hand."
Violet laughed, a sound as sharp and clear as the daggers she wielded. "Alright then, let's see what you've got. But don't say I didn't warn you." They squared off in the training circle, the familiar tension buzzing in the air between them. Y/n took a deep breath, focusing on Opal's advice. Find your own strength. Be patient. Violet watched them intently, her eyes assessing, calculating.
With a sudden burst of speed, Violent lunged at Y/n, her daggers a blur. This time, Y/n was ready. They deflected her first strike with their sword, pivoting smoothly to avoid her follow-up attack.
Their movements were more controlled, more deliberate than before. Violet's eyes widened slightly in surprise, but she quickly adjusted, her strikes becoming even more precise.
They moved in a deadly dance, each of them pushing the other to their limits. Y/n could feel the difference in their own abilities, the improvement that had come from merely remembering not to rush. For a moment, it seemed like they might actually gain the upper hand. They managed to disarm one of her daggers, sending it skittering across the ground. But Violet was far from defeated.
With a fluid motion, she twisted around Y/n, her remaining dagger pressed lightly against their throat. "Not bad," she breathed, her voice close to Y/n's ear. "You're getting better. But you still have a long way to go."
Y/n chuckled, stepping back as she released them. "I'll take that as a compliment."
"It is. Keep training like this, and who knows? Maybe one day you'll actually beat me."
"That's the plan."
She playfully shoved Y/n on the shoulder and turned to leave. But suddenly Violet paused. "Hey?"
"Hm?"
"I'll see you around. Keep your door unlocked tonight."-----------------------------------------
