I was regretting my decision to kiss Y/n, but not because I felt guilty about betraying Violet—no. Guilt wasn't a thing I felt anymore. I was regretting not becoming a Venin sooner.
The sheer power, the fire, the warmth from kissing Y/n... the words she said about what being a Venin was really all about.
It was like my old memories were actually beginning to fade, like they were a foreign thing that happened to a foreign person far, far away. The pain of betrayed everyone, it ebbed away.
And now all there was was war. WAR. Fighting, blood, seeping the ground of its magic. That was the only thing that suddenly mattered to me anymore. I began to see myself and Y/n as rulers over an army, claiming and destroying wherever we went.
Sgaeyl had abandoned me when I chose to come here. And rightfully so, she was a dragon, after all. In her place I had created a wyvern, but it didn't have the same bond I did with Sgaeyl. There was no relationship with the wyvern, it was merely a tool for me to use. There were no suggestions with it, only commands.
So dare I say that I actually liked it better that way? No arguing back, no 'dragons rule the world' business.I pondered these thoughts until there was a knock on my door, a knock that had suddenly become familiar. Using lesser magic, I undid the Venin Ward and opened the door. Y/n entered, her stride purposeful.
"Xaden, we're trying to invade Basgaith again. Their wards seem to be faltering once more, we must use this to our advantage and attack now!" She grabbed my riding leathers from the wall and threw them at me, "Put this on."
Before I could reply, her swishing braided hair had left the room.
For a split-second, a thought about Violet's safety crossed my mind, but I quickly shoved it aside. I hurried my leathers on and dashed out, almost forgetting to close my room. The field outside the castle was dotted with wyvern and venin riders. In the front was Y/n, ordering venin to go this way and that.
"Shadow-wielder," She smiled, "You ready for a little arson?"We took to the skies; it was a perfectly clear day for flight. I rode on the largest wyvern I'd created, and we arrived at Basgaith with ease. From the crowd of dragons and riders I recognized Imogen, who stared at me wide-eyed, and mouth agape.
"BURN THE GROUND! SEEP THE GROUND!" Y/n screamed from the front of the line. A massive green daggertail sunk its jaws into a wyvern without a rider, and I commanded my small army of eight to charge. With claws and teeth they surrounded the dragon, tearing and nipping. One of my wyvern caught a blast of fire and tumbled to the ground, but the other sevens weight were too much for even a dragon like Tairn, and the green dragon went down rider and all.
There was an eerie satisfaction to the rider's death, something that I couldn't quite place. It was soon replaced by hatred and bloodlust, the only two emotions I could feel anymore.
From the corner of my eye I saw Violet Sorrengail, and amidst the tiny part of me left still screaming "NO! NO!!!" Me and my wyvern did a swan-dive, and crashed into Tairn's chest. The big dragon bellowed and maneuvered away, and I began to give chase. I heard Violet trying to reason with me through her tears, but it was like an echo.
Only five of my wyvern army were left, but I figured it would be enough. Two of another Venin's cut off Tairn, stabbing with their tails and blasting with their fire.
He shielded Violet with his wings, which fueled my frustration. Amidst the panic I rose up and dove once again, ordering my wyvern to outstretch its talons and claw her. She was the enemy, the enemy!
Fifty feet. Forty feet. Twenty feet. Eight feet...
A massive blue dragon rammed into my side, and me and wyvern went tumbling down end over end until we crashed into the ground. Sgaeyl landed beside us, and nimbly snapped its neck.
I went to reach out to my former dragon, but there was a block. A shield. A wall that there had never been between us before.
Violet and Tairn came down beside us, a rune equipped in her left hand.
"Xaden, what have you done?" She whispered, and my blood-red eyes stared back fiercely. From above, I spotted Y/n fending off two griffins, then meeting my gaze back and her too, landing.
"He has done nothing," She laughed. "He has only been awakened, freed to meet his
true potential!"
"That's nothing but utter nonsense," Violet barked back.
Suddenly instead of seeing red, I began seeing black. It was overwhelming, I was out of control! Black tendrils danced around the three of us, and began to hiss and strike.
I yelled with horror, disbelief, agony and giddy joy. The shadows whipped and
danced and cut, and in the end there were two alive and one in shambles.
Two venin alive, and one rider dead.
