The next day, I knew what I had to do. After school, I went to her house; she had soccer practice, so she wouldn't know. JJ's house was huge; her father owned half the buildings in Gladesdale, and the family was well-respected. Her mom was high in the school board and would do anything to keep the family name gold. She had three younger brothers, Ryder, Lenny, and Teddy. Ryder was 10, and Lenny and Teddy were 8-year-old twins. She had an older sister, Nancy, who was in college. They all had their own rooms with each of their own bathrooms, a games room, and three lounge rooms, only one of which they used. JJ hated the house; she would often tell me that it's too big, and she wouldn't see her family half the time. I used to think she was stupid for saying that, but ever since Ryan left, the loneliness of an empty house, and I became friends.
I knocked on the door; the sound echoed, and I could hear sharp footsteps from the other side. The door opened with a creak, and a tall shadow stood at the door—it was JJ's mother.
"Hello?" said Mrs. Jones.
"Hello, Mrs. Jones. Do you remember me?"
"Ah, yes, you're the girl who is friends with my heathen of a daughter."
"Well, yes, I guess."
"Come in." The cold air of the empty house brushed past me, and each step echoed. The house had golden chandeliers and marble floors. We walked, which felt like forever, until we got to a blinding white kitchen.
"Sit down," she ordered, and I complied.
"So, where is my daughter?"
"At soccer."
"I never did like her doing soccer. Too many, how should I say it these days?"
"Soccer players?" I laughed, hoping that would be her answer.
"No, lesbians."
"What?"
"No wonder she turned out the way she did. She was too close to that Dekker girl, and now she's ruined the family."
"That's a lie," I screamed.
"What?"
"Gabriella is a liar. JJ didn't kiss Kacey Dekker," I said, although even JJ admitted to it.
"Gabriella is a good girl; she doesn't lie."
"You trust a horrible person over your own daughter?"
"I always suspected that my daughter liked girls, and now I'm right, like I always am."
"Gabriella is a liar; JJ never did anything like that. She wouldn't," I continued lying.
"Well, she did."
"You are a horrible mother; you let your husband beat your daughter because she's gay."
"So, you admit she is a lesbian?"
"How is that the only thing you picked up from that statement?"
"Your husband and you are horrible people; do you even know what's going on in your own home?"
"What my husband does in his own time is none of my business."
"What?" I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"You know, Maya, I never liked you always hanging out with her; you probably turned her into one of those."
"Yeah, I did, and I'm going to tell everyone. I'm going to ruin this family for what you did to her."
"You will not; I will kick you and your grandmother out of your house."
"You can't."
"You live on Hallow, right? Yes, my husband owns those houses. A horrible place it is; he was planning to build a golf course there actually. He can kick you out in a heartbeat."
