"Morning," JJ said.
"Hi, Jaje."
We sat awkwardly for a bit.
"Well, we better get to school," she said.
"Do you think school's the best idea right now?" I said in shock.
"No, but I need something to keep my mind off of it."
"Okay, but first we eat breakfast," I insisted.
I could see her turn white.
"Where's Gran?" she said, trying to turn it around.
"At the shops. Breakfast?"
"Oh, um, I'm not hungry," she said as I put a plate of toast in front of her.
"Of course, you are. I haven't seen you eat."
"Oh yeah, I guess I am," she picked up the slice, hands shaking, and put it in her mouth. She chewed with a forced smile.
"Yum, tastes good."
"I knew you would like it," I smiled. After we had finished, we were about to leave when JJ said,
"I just need to go to the toilet."
"Alright, have a few minutes anyway." It had been five minutes, and JJ hadn't returned. I went up the stairs and knocked on the door.
"J, you alright?" She didn't answer. Oh no, what has she done? I was ready to break the door down when I heard a faint,
"Yeah, I am."
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing, I'll be out in a minute. Just go back downstairs."
"Okay," I hesitantly said. Just as I was about to go, I heard a gag from the other side of the door. I moved closer and heard it louder: gag, spit, gag, spit, heavy breathing.
"Jaje," I screamed, "open the door now!" I was pounding on the door. I heard a click, and the door swung open. She stood there, wiped her mouth with her sleeve, and left.
"What are you playing at? I thought you had done something bad."
"Like what, baby?" she smiled.
"Why are you acting like that?"
"Like what?" Again.
"Like you're high. Are you high?"
She laughed.
"I may have gotten a skoosh of weed from Adam Lilts," still trying to take another puff.
"Adam Lilts, the Adam who got kicked out of school last year?" Trying to grab it from her hand.
"Yeah, he's a nice boy, really. Though gave me half price."
"Give it to me, JJ."
"No, I've never felt as good as I do right now."
"I need a serious conversation with you, and I can't if you're high."
"Yes, you can. Look," she stopped and stared at me, trying to hold in her laughter. After a second, she burst out laughing.
"Jessica, please," I said. "Don't throw your life away with drugs."
"What life?" she said. "I have no life. The only one I do have is horrible, I'll tell you that much." She slumped down on the couch and stared up at the ceiling.
"Did you notice the water stain on the ceiling? Kind of looks like a dog," still laughing.
"It's not funny," I said. She sat up and looked up at me.
