A few weeks later, I was home alone. Gran had taken the bus to bingo, as she often did. I mostly just stayed in bed, thinking about the days before. I was getting a glass of water in the kitchen when the doorbell rang. I looked through the peephole to see JJ. She stood there, looking sad, with tears in her eyes, and wouldn't look me in the eyes.
"What's wrong?" I hugged her. She buried her face into my shoulder and sobbed. I could feel her tears running down my back.
I pulled her up from my shoulder; her bottom lip quivered. "Come on, tell me," I said, putting my fingers through her hair.
"My... my mom found out. She kicked me out. I'm sorry," she broke down on the floor.
"Hey, hey, it's okay. Don't cry; you have nothing to be sorry for."
"She said I ruined the family name."
"You didn't ruin anything."
"No, I did. I ruined everything and I ruined our relationship. I'm so sorry," she curled up into a ball on the cold kitchen floor. I rubbed her leg.
"No, you didn't, I promise."
"Yes, I did. You don't love me."
"I do love you."
"Not the same way. I love you," she sat up.
"I love you enough to know you didn't ruin our relationship." She wiped the tears from her eyes.
"Really?"
"Yes, I promise. I love you," she grabbed me and hugged me so tight I couldn't breathe.
"How did your mom find out?"
"Gabriela told her mom that she saw me and Kacey Dekker holding hands."
"Kacey Dekker?" Kacey was a girl in the grade above us; JJ and her were on the soccer team and got pretty close.
"Kacey mother fucking Dekker."
"She said she saw us kissing behind the sports shed."
"Were you?"
"Yeah, once," she sobbed.
"Hey, don't start crying."
"I can't help it."
"You know you could stay here if you want until your mom forgives you."
"Wait, really?" her face lit up.
"Yeah, I mean you used to stay here all the time anyway."
"Great, I'll go get my stuff." Before I could say anything, she had rushed out the door.
I sat on the kitchen floor for a couple of minutes in a daze until I got up and started cleaning my bedroom. I made a bed on the floor for JJ using old covers and pillows that I hadn't used since JJ used to come over. I went back downstairs to clean up a little bit. The doorbell rang again. I looked through the peephole to see JJ and Pierre standing there. They were pushing and shoving each other like a couple of six-year-olds. I opened the door before I could open it fully; JJ jumped on me and wrapped her legs around me. I, of course, as someone who couldn't hold up my own weight, couldn't hold hers too, keeping in mind she's much taller than me. I fell on the ground; I just lay straight on my back, and JJ hugged me. She had a suitcase of stuff.
"Can you get off her, God, clingy," Pierre was standing at the doorframe; the light made him look angelic. JJ sat up and looked at him. "What are you even doing here?" she said.
"I came to say hi."
"Well, we're going to watch a movie," she said.
"We are?"
