At my house, I packed some clothes for me and JJ. She sat on my bed, blood splattered on her face.
"Jaje, you need to get packed," I said.
No answer.
"Jessica," I looked into her eyes. I could see that JJ wasn't there anymore.
"JJ, answer me," I grabbed her cheeks.
"I-i-i," she muttered.
"Oh shit, Gran, we can't leave her here," I ran downstairs to the phone and called the care home from a flyer that we received. "There will be a van to pick her up tomorrow," was the last words. I felt bad for leaving her, of course, but it was the best option for her.
I went back upstairs, JJ still in the same position.
"J, he deserved it."
"N-no, he didn't."
"Come on, let's go."
"W-where?" she looked up at me.
"We're running away."
"Why?" she said. "No, I can't."
"JJ, you're going to be arrested if we don't. I guarantee the cops are already on their way."
"To where?"
"New York, California, Florida, hell, anywhere we want."
"How do you plan to get there?" she said.
"We're two 15-year-olds without any money."
"You have money," I replied.
"But that's for college," she said.
"I don't think college is an option right now," putting my hand on her back.
She looked down. "I was on a good path."
"Well, if everything's been thrown away, we can steal a car from my garage."
"What?"
"Come on, let's go," she said and moved quickly to the door. I kissed Gran on the forehead. "I'll see you soon." She still had her house keys.
"Which one are we taking?" I asked.
"Doesn't matter, whatever one we want."
"But we can't drive."
"Doesn't matter, I have nothing to live for anyway," she laughed.
"Who's driving?" I asked.
"I'll drive," she said.
"Wait, we don't have the keys."
"Oh shit, you're right," she said, biting her nails. "I'll have to go in and get them," she walked off.
"What if you get caught?" I said, grabbing her arm.
"It's fine, if anyone's in there, it would only be my brothers and their nanny."
"Okay, but I'm coming with you," I grabbed her hand and walked, unlocked the door.
"See, no one's here," she laughed.
"Okay, where do they keep the keys?"
"My dad's office," we were about to walk up the stairs when a voice said, "How you doing, baby sis?" We turned to see Nancy, JJ's sister, sitting on the couch with a lollipop.
"Nancy, you scared the shit out of me," they went in for a hug.
"Who's this, your girlfriend?" Nancy laughed at us, still holding hands.
"Um, yeah, she is actually."
"Oh, hope you two weren't going to do anything upstairs," laughing.
"No, of course not," I said.
"Hm," she said, nodding sarcastically with a smile.
"Why are you here, you're supposed to be at college."
"Got kicked out," JJ looked at her in confusion. "Yeah, I know, Dad's going to kill me," Nancy said, jumping back on the couch. JJ looked at her, pure horror spread across her face.
"JJ, don't, we have to go," I whispered to her.
"Where are you going?" Nancy said, more alert.
"I'm sorry, I can't tell you," JJ said.
"Whatever, if you're going to do things, I don't really care," she said and laid back down.
"Hey, do you know if Mom got any chips? I know Dad was on a diet when I left, but he must have gotten over that by now," laughing.
"I, um, don't know, you'll have to look," she said as we went upstairs. We went into the office; it had an easy feel. The keys were locked in a glass case. There were about 10 sets of keys; about 6 had a car to go with. We went downstairs. Nancy was in the kitchen, rummaging through the cupboards.
"I have to tell her," JJ said.
"JJ, no, you can't."
"I owe it to her, she was the only person in this family who cared for me."
"JJ, it will break her," I cried, pulling her arm.
"Just wait in the car," she said. I followed her instead of going to the car.
"Nancy," JJ said, peeking around the arch frame.
"Yeah," Nancy mumbled with something in her mouth.
"I need to tell you something."
"You didn't get her pregnant, did you?" she laughed, looking at me. I awkwardly laughed back.
"Nance, I'm serious," she looked her in the eyes.
"Oh yeah," she sat down on the chair.
"Dad's... Dad's..." she stuttered. I put my hand on hers.
She took a deep breath. "Dad's dead."
Nancy's mouth dropped.
"What? When? How?"
"Today, and that's all I can say. I have to go, Nancy, you'll probably never see me again, but I just want you to know how much I love you," she cried and hugged Nancy. We left the house, hearing Nancy's sobs in the background.
"I have to go back in, I have to talk to her more," JJ said through cries.
"No, JJ, we have to go, you've told her, that's enough, we need to go, we don't have much time," I dragged her to the car.
"Okay," she nodded. She got in the car and sat at the steering wheel.
"Come on, let's go," I shouted.
"You don't know how to drive."
"It can't be that hard," she put the keys in the car and pushed the pedal. The car jolted with a start. She lifted her foot and placed it again, holding it down. It moved forward. She pulled out of the driveway. The car ride was silent until the fog of awkwardness was broken by the sounds of sirens in the distance. They got louder till the car was behind us.
"Get down," I yelled, pushing her shoulder.
The car turned and headed down the path to JJ's house.
"Oh shit, we're going to get caught," she said.
"No, we're not, we just have to get out of town, then we can go anywhere we want."
"Okay," she said, nodding. "What if Nancy tells them where we went?" she flustered.
"We didn't tell her where we were going, we don't even know where we're going."
"Yeah, you're right."
