Despite her mind racing with everything Mar Novu had told her, Courtney did her best to stay focused on what she'd originally been doing. Trying to meditate into the Star Force so that she could gain a better understanding of it and hopefully her powers, since she didn't want to risk losing controlling of her abilities during the coming battle with the ISA, since while they could be the game changer that prevents the new JSA from going the way of their predecessors, if she couldn't control it, she could end up becoming a liability and put her team in more danger than the ISA ever could.
Which was why she was meditating hard, trying to focus on her goal of reaching the Star Force when she heard a voice speak.
"What took you so long?" the voice asked and Courtney opened her eyes to see a man she'd only seen in old photos before, but she knew who he was immediately.
"Grandpa?" Courtney asked, since this man was Ted Knight, her grandfather on her mother's side and the first person to ever use the Cosmic Staff.
"It's about time you showed up, Courtney. We've been waiting for what feels like an eternity for you to find your way here to the Star Force." Ted said.
"Wait, are you the Star Force or my grandfather?" Courtney asked, confused.
"Both in a way. Because of my connection to the staff, I had enough of a connection to the Star force that while I can't use it like you can, when I died, my soul came here so that I could serve as a guide to you when the time came for you to enter here. But I am still Ted Knight, your grandfather and I'd like to finally get to hug my granddaughter." Ted said and Courtney smiled as she actually ran forward and finally hugged the grandfather she'd never gotten to meet, since Ted had passed away before she was born.
"I've waited so long for this moment. You look so much like your mother, my Barbara. I have to admit, I was disappointed when the staff didn't bond to her or Eliza, but I guess neither of them were really cut out for this work, but Sylvester proved himself to quite capable, even if his connection to the staff wasn't strong enough to allow him to come here when he died, since I know you're wondering why it's me and not him who's greeting you." Ted said.
"No offense." Courtney said.
"None taken, I understand, but he would be both proud of what you're doing and regretful that you got involved in this life. As am I. When I built the staff, I had no intention of choosing someone so young to be its wielder, but while I may have built the staff, the Star force is the one that gave it a mind of its own. But it did choose me to create the staff, which is part of how I was able to end up here." Ted said.
"So this is where I'll go when I die?" Courtney asked.
"Yes, especially since you've managed what neither your father or I ever could. You've become an actual avatar of the star force, essentially becoming a human version of the staff." Ted said.
"What exactly is the Star Force? My cousin Kara's friend Brainy explained it kind of, but I'm still not sure what it is?" Courtney asked.
"The Star Force is one of the five cosmic forces of the universe and actually the youngest of them, but still older than time itself. It's the force that actually created the universe, since it's a force of pure, light and creation." Ted said.
"Why am I the only person who can actually use it without the staff? My friend Chloe doesn't need an artifact to use the speed force?" Courtney asked.
"Because every force of nature does things differently and seeing how powerful the star force is, it had to choose its avatar very carefully. That's why the staff was created in the first place. To locate humans who it deemed worthy of it. The staff was meant to gradually connect its user to the Star Force, but it didn't take human life spans into account. It's only because if you have residual star force energy inherited from both sides of your family that the Star Force was finally able to connect to you fully. Now, it's time for you to learn to use it properly, since until you can control it, attempting to use the Star Force without the staff could turn the power of creation into destruction.
