Shopping Malls

You walked downstairs to see Gary dressed in a beige suit. He opened his arms and kissed you.
"Happy birthday love"
You walked into his hug and smiled.
"Thank you babe"
He pulled away and sat a plate of food in front of you.
"Right eat that and then go get dressed im taking you out into town today"
"What.. where"
"Shopping"
"Shopping.. you're taking me shopping, but you hate shopping"
"You're right I do.. but it's part of my present.. you get my card for the day and then we come home and you open a few little surprises over a nice bottle of wine"
"What about Olly"
"He's already dropped off at your mothers and after we've done our shopping they are coming round here for a big family dinner"
"Gaz i.. thank you"
"You don't need to thank me darling.. now come on eat up"
You finished your breakfast and got dressed into a white slim dress to match Gary's shirt. You walked down the stairs and into Gary's arms.
"You look beautiful"
"I love you"
"I love you more.. come on you"
You got in a cab and went to the Mall, you walked about shops with Gary's and then sat down to have lunch in a restaurant. As you were waiting to be given a table you saw some boys following an older man and throwing stuff out of his bags. Gary walked over and shouted at them. They gave him a look as they walked away, as he walked back over to you, you put an arm around him.
"You're so brave"
"Little shits.. it's disgusting"
"I know babe.. but thanks to you that old man can walk away in peace"
You sat and had lunch with Gary as you recalled previous birthdays.
"I remember this one when I was a kid.. I got a phone call from school saying my exam had been changed.. turns out it was my mates and they had thrown me and party at the school"
"You would have been stressing"
"Too right I was"
Gary laughed and stroked your hand. Once you were finished with the meal you walked out of the restaurant and started to walk down the street. As you were walking past an alley someone grabbed Gary's hand and shoved him up against a wall. One of the boys from before was holding a knife to his neck.
"You think you're something big old timer"
"Get your hands off me"
"This your wife.. she's fit"
"Don't you dare"
The boy looked at the watch on Gary's wrist.
"Give me that"
"Fine.. here, you happy now"
"No.. I want that"
He pointed to the ring on your finger.
"But that's my wedding ring"
"I don't care it's pricey.. give it"
"Y/n don't listen to him"
"You want a cut throat"
He pressed the knife closer to Gary's neck.
"Don't please.. I'll give it to you"
He let go of Gary and held out a hand. Gary lunged at him and hit the knife out of his hand. They scrambled until the boy threw Gary up against a wall and started to punch him. You grabbed the boy and tried to get him off, he turned to you and grabbed your neck.
"Give me the ring"
"No"
Gary got up and punched the boy who turned and beat Gary to a pulp. A security guard was walking past and started to chase the boy off. You ran over to Gary and took a hold of his hand.
"You okay.. god Gary look at you"
"I'm fine really"
"Please don't pretend"
"I am just a bit bruised.. he got a few lucky shots"
"A few.. you sure your okay"
"Positive.. it looks worse"
"Come on let's go home"
You helped him up and found a cab. As you got home you pulled out a first aid kit and started to clean Gary's cuts. As you looked at the blood on his face you started to cry.
"Hey hey.. hey what's wrong"
"I'm sorry.. I should have helped.. he had me and I just froze"
"Y/n darling it's okay"
"It's not though is it.. I should have helped but I felt like I was.. I couldn't breathe"
"You felt like it was Robbie or your dad.. honey look at me, I get it okay.. it's okay I'm fine"
"You sure"
"I'm sure"
You heard the door open and wiped your eyes. You're mother walked in with Olly.
"Happy birth.. oh my god what happened"
"It's fine just a small incident"
Olly hid behind his grandmother as he saw Gary's face.
"Hey little man.. it's okay daddy just fell"
"Daddy.. I don't like it"
"It's okay it's still me.. right mummy"
"Yeah.. look Olly it's still your dad.. look mummy will clean it up okay"
You showed Olly the wipe and washed the blood off of Gary's face.
"See.. all gone"
"Okay"
He came around and gave Gary a hug.
"Hey monster that's better isn't it"
"Yeah daddy"
"Right enough of this nonsense now.. it's mummy birthday.. daddy's going to go make dinner and then we can do presents okay"
Your mother walked through to the kitchen with Gary and sighed.
"You gonna tell me what happened"
"There was this boy.. he started on this old man then gave me grief for stepping in.. he got a few lucky shots that's all"
"Gary you look like you've done six round with Tyson fury"
"Honestly I'm fine.. but it really freaked y/n out.. it ruined our day out and I really don't want it to ruin this so can we just drop it please"
"You should file a report"
"Look it's not that bad okay.. please just let it go"
Gary came through a while later with plates of food for the family. As he sat next to you he grunted in pain.
"You okay"
"Fine.. fine"
"He's not fine look at him.. I told him he should file a report"
"Mum please not in front of Olly"
"Well I'm sorry y/n but what if that boy had hurt you"
"I wouldn't have let that happen"
"You seemed to have done a great job at keeping him at bay I must say"
"Mum please not now okay"
"I don't let anyone lay hands on my wife"
"That's right her great protector"
"What the hell is that supposed to mean"
"Gary just leave it okay"
"No I want to hear this"
"Well you act like you protect her and save her like a damsel in distress.. where were you when Robbie was hurting her aye"
"MUM"
Gary sighed and threw down his fork.
"I wasn't there"
He pushed his chair back and stormed upstairs. You followed him and sat next to him on the bed.
"I'm sorry.. she's was bang out of order"
"No it's fine.. she was right, I wasn't there.. I'm trying my best y/n"
He started to cry.
"Gary.. it's okay"
"I just want to keep you safe.. you deserve that.. you deserve to feel loved"
"I do feel loved"
"I'm sorry.. im sorry I'm not good enough"
"Don't do this to yourself.. you know you're more than good enough.. Gary you're the only person who's ever cared about me"
"I just wish I'd seen the signs with Robbie.. I beat myself up about that every single day"
"Why.. I'm safe now, I'm with you"
"Yeah but.. you wasted time with him when you could have been with me.. and then I.. I let you down during those years y/n.. you didn't deserve that"
"You've never let me down.. come on.. let's finish dinner please"
"Yeah of course"
Yous walked back downstairs. Your mother sighed.
"I'm sorry Gary"
"Yeah.. let's just get on with it"
You took a hold of Gary's hand as you sat back down. Once you had finished dinner Gary came through with a small pile of gifts.
"Gary this is too much"
"You know I like to spoil you.. just open them"
You tore open the paper on one of the boxes to reveal a golden love heart necklace rimmed with diamonds, inscribed on the front was a date.
"You probably don't even remember what that date is"
"Course I do.. it's the night you picked me up"
"Yeah.. for me it's the night I thought we could stand a chance"
"I know things haven't always gone the way we hoped.. but look around Gary we've made it.. we have a beautiful son, each other.. we have a family"
"I know.. and it's all thanks to you babe.. come on open the next one"
You opened a larger box that revealed a picture frame of You, Gary and Olly rimmed with golden gems.
"It's beautiful Gary.. I love it"
The third gift you unwrapped was a voucher for a tattoo parlour.
"I thought we could both get one.. you know a family one"
"Gary.. this is so sweet thank you"
You kissed his cheek and smiled.

The next morning you were making breakfast when you heard a knock at the door. You opened it to see your mother.
"Olly left his teddy at mine"
"Right"
"You're still mad at me"
"Too right I am.. you have no idea what that did to him mum.. he was getting so much better and you set him right back"
"I'm sorry I didn't know"
"Mum.. he hates himself most of the time.. do you know how hard it is for Gary to hear you say he's not enough for me"
"Can I come in I'll apologise properly"
"No.. I'll talk to you later not now"
You shut the door and went through to plate up breakfast. Gary wandered through from upstairs and wrapped his arms around you.
"Morning you"
"Morning.. god you're so beautiful"
"Gary.."
"What babe"
You turned around and placed a hand on his cheek.
"I love you.. and yesterday with that boy.. are you okay"
"Told you babe I'm fine.. I've got you I'm okay"
"You sure.. I know what my mother said hurt you"
He sighed and took a hold of your hand.
"If that is what your mother thinks then.. maybe I should do better"
"Gary you know fine well your enough"
"Look I'm fine please let's not do this"
"Okay but.. if it bothers you, if that mind is playing tricks on you.. just talk to me, I can help set the record straight"
You kiss his head and turn back to making breakfast.
"How did I get you"
"You saved my life..I love you Gaz"
