"Hello all, ever heard the song I've Been Working on the Railroad. Well this story stars Eileen as a brand new railroad manager who gets a lesson in why the new way is not always the best way....Its a short tale called Honor the Dead"•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Eileen was semi perturbed. She spent six years in college only to end up in Macomb, Georgia. She had gotten her masters degree in Transportation Management and landed a great job with BNSF. She figured she would be in charge of a large operation or shop but instead was the night shift manager of a small yard with less than ten employees and two locomotives.
Part of her didn't mind the night shift all that much. It was quiet and A LOT cooler. The Georgia heart and humidity was brutal. On top of that she was only responsible for three employees at night and all of them had 25+ years. Her primary focus was cutting costs and making the operation as a whole more profitable and productive. Her mechanical employee was a man named Gus. Gus was a fourth generation railroader at this yard and was six months shy of retirement. He was an older man but could work circles around kids half his age. She never had to find work for him to do, he always found something to keep himself busy. He had worked night shift his entire career, preferring to work when the temperatures were a bit cooler.
