A young dark teenager stares at his reflection in the bathroom mirror. His curly black hair bloomed out of his head like a bush. He turns his face towards the left to check his jawline which wasn't seen because of his body fat. His height was around 6 feet, which was one of his advantages. However, one criterion wasn't enough for the girls to like a guy. He pulls his shirt up to check his body fat situation. It was slowly getting in shape with his new routine. He was waiting for his abs to be revealed before high school. He pulls his shirt down and stares back into the mirror.
"Calm down, Kevin. Breathe in and breathe out." He told himself.
Kevin was finally preparing himself to try to ask a girl out. High school is the right time when relationships become the talk of the town. Rumours, dates and crushes become the hot topics. The modern world was changing with people doing anything else but studying in school. Everyone was getting prepared for the high school prom with their girl and so was Kevin. He was going to propose to one of the most beautiful girls in the school. Sorry, not one of the most beautiful, the most beautiful girl in the school. Natasha.
Kevin still remembers the first time he got a glance at her. He was sitting on the bench for the inter-school soccer match. He was subbed out for the game. He was one of the most talented players in the school but the coach despised him. The coach liked Kevin's mom but she rejected him. He took his anger out on Kevin by not letting him play the big matches. He wouldn't be on the team if his mom hadn't talked to the principal. Kevin was sitting with a gloomy face on the bench watching the team lose without him. The school entrance was right next to the ground. The people playing on the ground would get a clear view if guests arrived at the college. Then, A Mercedes E-class stopped next to the tree at the edge of the ground. Kevin turned from his seat to look towards the car. He didn't know why he turned that way. He felt like a strong force pulled him in that direction. That's when he saw that twinkle in her dark brown eyes. The wide smile with her white teeth perfectly aligned. She gently pulled a strand of her black hair, which was going over her face, behind her ear.
Her olive skin was shining like gold in the morning sunlight. The black-coloured top over her tight white leggings. She held her bag over her shoulder tightly, looking at the entrance. Kevin has the image of her completely stuck in his mind. Kevin couldn't stop thinking about her for the past 3 months. He was trying to anticipate whether he should propose to her or not. Finally, the time has come.
"KEVIN!!! Come down immediately."
There comes his mom, Stacy, who perfectly ruins his thoughts. "Coming, Mom."
He immediately got off his thoughts and ran down the stairs to the hall. He pours the cornflakes and milk into his bowl.
"How was yesterday's match, Kevin? How many minutes you played?" His mom asks from the kitchen.
"I was subbed out for the whole match, Mom."
"I am sorry, honey. I didn't know. I will teach that bastard a lesson."
"Just leave it, mom. It was just one day. I am happy the team won."
"I can help, Kevin."
"It's fine, mom. It doesn't worry me much." He said. "However, you could help me by dropping me to the school."
"That's not happening. I will be late."
"Please. I am tired of cycling."
"I have an important meeting, Kevin. Just grow up and get used to it. You are in high school." "Fine. The cycle it is." He replies.
Kevin stuffs the rest of the cornflakes in his mouth leaving the bowl on the table. He grabs his bag and runs to the door.
"Bye, mom."
"Bye. Take care."
His cycle was fallen on the lawn right in front of the house. He always forgets to put the stand properly. He picks it up and jumps on the seat. He had to get up early to reach before the first class started. After a 30-minute ride, he reaches his school. He parks it in the stand and locks it instantly. He checks around to find no other cycle in the cycle stand. Everyone had their vehicle or a driver to drop them off. He felt weird cycling but his mom always convinced him it would make him more self-sufficient. Kevin runs towards the school entrance. Right ahead of him was the beauty he was waiting for.
Natasha was talking with a few of her girls right next to the staircase's spiral bannister. She was having a fun conversation with her friends. Her smile. Nothing could melt his heart better than her smile. He gave a huge sigh and walked ahead with full confidence towards her.
Suddenly, Arjun jumps in the middle of Natasha's girl group. Kevin's footsteps immediately come to a halt. Sam pulls out a rose from behind his back and kneels on his left knee.
"Natasha, Will you join me for the prom?"
A crowd of boys were at one end. They were cheering loudly for Sam. "Yes!! Yes!! Yes!!" The crowd around cheered.
Kevin's heart was beating as fast as a horse galloping away. He prayed for a 'No'. Then, Sam quiets the crowd. He turns towards Natasha. Everyone was waiting what Natasha's next words were going to be.
"Yes!" She smiled.
Everyone around shouted with joy except for one person. Kevin slowly started to walk backwards in a disheartened mood. As his eyes were looking ahead at both of them, he tripped on someone's shoe and fell with a huge thud on his back. The whole school's eyes were on him lying down on the floor. Nobody helped instead they just watched that unpopular introvert lay on his back. Kevin pushed the door and ran out. He got a small glance of Natasha back at him. All he received was a blank reaction. She had no pity, sadness or happiness. Just blank.
He couldn't get embarrassed further. He went back to the parking lot. He takes his cycle, to go on the way to his private space.
