The great god of the sun, Ra, emerged from the hill upon the river of chaos, marking the first day of creation. With her divine spirit, she brought forth the goddess of moisture, Tefnut, and the god of air, Shu. These two powers were his first progeny and were responsible for maintaining the balance of life, as moisture and air were essential for the sustenance of all living things.
From Ra's divine form, he brought forth additional deities to aid in the maintenance and balance of the cosmos. The goddess of abundance and fertility, Bastet, was born from her fiery presence, while the goddess of love and beauty, Hathor, emerged from her golden light. Maat, the goddess of truth and justice, was imbued with her divine wisdom, and the fierce and destructive goddess, Sekhmet, was created from her great power.
The sun god's children, Tefnut, god of moisture, and Shu, god of air were drawn to each other and fell deeply in love. Their passion created Nut, the goddess of the celestial sky, and Geb, the god of the mortal soil. Nut, the god of the sky, and Geb, the god of the Earth.
Geb and Nut, the gods of the Earth and Sky, respectively, found themselves drawn to one another in a way that was both surprising and enlightening. Their love ran deep, and they yearned to create life together. However, it soon became apparent that their desire for a child was not to be granted so easily. A prophecy was delivered,
"Geb and Nut's offspring will rule over Egypt."
Hearing this foretold future, the sun god became filled with bitter envy. In her jealousy, she cursed Nut with the inability to give birth to a child, ensuring that their legacy would be denied.
Nut, the goddess of the sky, found herself devastated by the sun god's curse, which prevented her from bringing forth new life into the world. Her distress was immeasurable, and she sought the counsel of Thoth, the god of knowledge and wisdom. Thoth was sympathetic to Nut's plight and determined to aid her in whatever way he could. With his divine intelligence, he challenged the sun god to a game of Senet, a board game that was popular in ancient Egypt. Thoth's unparalleled wit and cunning proved triumphant, and the sun god was forced to cover her eyes for four days.
After Nut's request was granted by Thoth, the god of knowledge and wisdom, the three deities, Nut, Geb, and Thoth, were permitted to procreate for four days. During this time, Isis, the goddess of magic, Osiris, the god of life, Nephthys, the goddess of harmony and peace, and Seth, the god of war and desert, were born from Nut and Geb. These four deities, along with the other five gods who had been born previously, namely Shy, the god of air, Tefnut, the god of moisture, and the Sun, the goddess of creation and the root of all things, formed the sacred group of Nine Deities known by the Egyptians as the "ENNEAD."
Seth, the fierce and protective deity of war and the desert possessed the ability to control sand and ward off foreign invaders. Nephthys, the gentle goddess of harmony and peace, possessed the power to quieten the voices of those who caused disorder, opening their ears and mouths to understanding. Isis, the magical goddess, wed Osiris, the god of life, and offered him a precious gift; she kept the Nile from drying out, ensuring the land would remain rich and fertile for eternity.
Osiris, the god of life, possessed immense power that allowed him to grant longevity and prosperity to all who dwelled upon the Earth. The Egyptians held him in the highest esteem, marveling at his absolute strength and unparalleled honor. He wielded such power that the great sun god herself, who had dominion over all things, dared not defy him. Eventually, the right of sovereignty over the land of Egypt was passed on to Osiris.
Yet, even in this period of tranquility, there remained those who coveted Osiris' power and wished to see it diminished. One such individual was the god of destruction, who, overcome with jealousy, chose to sow chaos and discord. He whispered lies into the ear of Seth, the guardian of the desert, convincing him that his brother's power was unjust. Blinded by this deception, Seth, the protector of Egypt, fell to madness and sought to destroy all that Osiris had built.
