Theo had never been a lucky man.

He was born with shitty eyes and was allergic to contacts. He was short and terminally geeky. He was boring. He was clumsy. He had been the target of bullies since kindergarten. He never had a real friend until he moved to D.C. and met Charles. He never thought he would ever be really truly happy. Ever. Until he met Reed again.

Reed made him happy. He believed he made Reed happy or at least he tried to every day.

Theo kept staring at his phone but not really seeing it.

Maybe he was too happy. Maybe this thing called fate just needed  to shake stuff up a bit. You couldn't be too happy. He could not be too happy.

He wanted to cry. He was going to die. That doctor had went on and on about hope but from where Theo was sitting there was no hope now. There was just a prospect of death looming in his future. The big sleep. The most ultimate mystery. And he was going to lose Reed.

Maybe he would lose him before the Big Sleep. After all why would a man like him stick around to watch him die ,? He bet his ex Pierce wouldn't have stuck around. If Reed stayed it would be out of pity. God , why was this happening! , he silently raged.

" Come to bed , darling. You need rest. "

His eyes met Reed's. Please don't leave me, he wanted to say. But he didn't. He quickly closed his eyes so he wouldn't see the pity reflected in Reed's. The regret. Was the man regretting asking him to marry him ? Moving from Texas to D.C. ? Reed hadn't anticipated any of this. Theo would not blame him if he did think that.

What he actually said was ," Why ? Will resting help me die slower? "

Reed moved closer to him. He fell to his knees before him. He almost looked like he was praying. He draped his arms around Theo's stiff body and pulled him close. " No dying on me. You hear me ? That is not allowed. We have a wedding to plan in August. A Big Fat Gay Ass wedding in our home town. The wedding of the century. And I don't have those life insurance papers signed yet remember? "

Theo wanted to laugh but he couldn't. He just leaned more into Reed's embrace and held him tightly. His unshed tears stung his closed eyes.

" Theodore, I love you. You will beat this. We will beat this. "

He sighed and held on to Reed like he was drowning and Reed was the life boat. He hoped Reed was right. Hope. That's what Saint said.

Hope. Such a funny word. Almost meaningless.

Reed helped him up and lead him to their bedroom where they both reclined on the bed , still holding each other quietly. Still thinking their individual thoughts. Neither fell asleep. They just lay there, intertwined, until the morning rose.

Reed called into work and explained the situation to his supervisor Juanita Greene. She was surprisingly understanding.

Reed called Margaret to say that Theo wasn't coming into the office today and to reschedule his appointments. Margaret was understanding as well and very upset to hear the news.

Then Reed set about to brew coffee and get them both ready for the doctor. It was time to start fighting this bitch called Cancer.
