WARNING: This chapter is very gory.
I've always dreamed of being in a story or one of my books, but this, this was real. I was actually fighting for my life and trying to survive. I was stuck, wondering what happened to my family... and what would happen to us. If you cover up something that's happened, how do you learn from it? For all we know the same mistake could be made again and some other kids or grownups would have to face the same torture. The apocalypse, how was it covered up? I don't know, but the story must be told.We were soaring over the ocean, through fluffy clouds and blue skies. Such an ironic day when there's a zombie apocalypse. Evangeline was flying the plane (quite well actually), with Mr. Sapoval as co-pilot. I grew up a military kid so to me, flying on a plane is more fun than a roller coaster ( especially if there is turbulence), but with the thought that someone my age was flying the plane was a little unnerving. Instead of staying in the cockpit with Evangeline and Mr. Sapoval, I went to the aircraft cabin, sat down, and examined my scythe. The brilliant blood red and deep black shined unnaturally and the figure between the staff and the blade had a slight eerie glow to it. My outfit matched the blade completely in style and color. "What are you looking at?" asked Mr. Tem. "My scythe,"I responded quietly. I hadn't been talking as much since we first saw Mr. Raynor as a zombie. I looked out the window of the jet, the sun was setting, there was only blue as far as I could see, and there were clouds in the distance. "Karen, do those look like storm clouds to you?" I asked. She looked out her window, squinting slightly. "Hm, maybe, they look kind of dark,"she answered. Worry slowly started to fill me, but exhaustion also took over. "Well it's probably fine, we can't tell which way the wind is blowing so maybe the clouds are going the other way." I said, though still secretly filled with doubt.
CRASH. I woke up to the sound of... thunder and rain. THUNDER and RAIN?! I jumped up and ran to the area where Evangeline and Mr. Sapoval were. Evangeline's face was pale ghostly white as she tried to keep a grasp of the world and not pass out. We were flying through dark clouds and barely anything was visible through the downpour. Lighting flashed on the right and Evangeline swerved away from it, causing me to fall to the ground. "Keep on flying straight," I said calmly. Anyone who could have seen me then would have thought I was crazy for acting so calmly, but I've trained myself to keep part of my mind calm and sane(sometimes). "That's right,"said Mr. Sapoval. "Just stay calm and fly straight, after the storm clears up we only have about an hour left to the airport in California, Eclipse you go tell the others to hang on." I nodded and carefully and swiftly made my way back to the others. "Everybody, put your seatbelts on," I ordered. "IF we make it through this storm,"asked Charlene in a slightly shaky voice. "How long do we have left to California?"
"Maybe a little more than an hour, so hold on." I said collectedly.
"Good,"said Yoyo
"Mr. Tem, where did you put Kayden?" asked Karen. "In there,"he said, pointing to the overhead compartment. Another crash of thunder made us all jump. I looked out the window, it seemed like the storm was calming down. "Hello, everybody,"Mr. Sapoval announced from the intercom. "The clouds are starting to clear a little bit, so we will be able to go a little faster to get to California." We were heading towards the States, but we had no idea what would be waiting for us.We landed on a long, gray, barren runway. Cautiously getting off the plane, we looked around, but everything was empty and quiet. "Come on," said Mr. Sapoval. "Let's go into the airport." We silently followed him, none of us daring to make a sound. Everything was gray and dark, the stores were empty and disarranged. Guessing the airport was completely empty, we grabbed a baggage cart and put our weapons on it (and Kayden), so we would not have to carry them. Plants lay knocked over and TVs were hanging from their cords and wires. "What happened here?"whispered Mr. Tem. And we soon found out. Walking into another gate, we found hundreds and hundreds of zombies. We stopped in our tracks and grabbed our weapons from the cart. Blind with fear everybody ran forward to attack. I didn't. I don't know why. Was I scared? Kind of. But no, it was the fact that I realized we were killing real people. Even if they were zombies. Would we bring them back? Could we?
Before I knew it, a zombie was running towards me. Instinctively, I sliced at the zombie with my scythe and it disintegrated into to black dust. Something came over me, it might have been determination, but I have a feeling it was something else. It was... yes, it was, it was insanity, insanity and sadness. I ran to the other zombies, slashing at them ferociously. "Who created this disease?''I thought hatefully. Questions flitted through my mind as I mercilessly stabbed and slit the hearts of the undead. What had happened to my family? What happened to my little sister? Tears started to fill my eyes. Everything was a blur in that frenzy of sorrow, hate and madness. Until at the corner of my eye, I saw that Evangeline and Charlene were cornered. Yoyo and Karen were at the other side of the room occupied with hundreds of other zombies. Mr. Tem and Mr. Sapoval too were dealing with others. I redirected my course to Charlene and Evangeline, the zombies were closing in fast. Fear of them becoming an undead empowered me. I jumped on chairs and debris, and suddenly I was high above them all. "Guys!!" I yelled. Tears fell as my scythe started to glow and so did everyone else's. Blinded I held on to my scythe slowly falling until I noticed... it was a bow. I pulled the string and an arrow of light(maybe a laser?) appeared. I fired arrows at the zombies, not giving them a chance to get to the others. Landing on the ground I ran to Evangeline and Charlene. "Our weapons changed too," said Evangeline bewilderingly. They held out their now changed weapons. Evangeline's weapon was now a staff with two sickle blades on the ends, Charlene's was now two lightsabers. "Look,"said Charlene. "This piece of paper fell out of the gun, I can't decipher it cause it's too faded though." Mr. Sapoval and the others ran over to us. "What did your weapons turn into?" I asked.
"Still a rocket launcher, but now it shoots four rockets," said Mr. Sapoval.
"My muramasa blade turned into shuriken, which are ninja stars"said Mr. Tem
"Too bad we don't have any weapons," said Karen.
"Yeah Eclipse, that was so cool what you did,"added Yoyo.
"Wait," I cut in. "What did I do?"
They shrugged, maybe they thought that I already knew. "What time is it?" I said. I looked at the clock (that was somehow still working), it was 4:00 pm. "We should get some food and rest,"said Evangeline. We all agreed.
We scavenged all the shops for food and water, also grabbing backpacks to carry all the supplies in, not leaving anything behind. When we were finished it was about 8:00. "Who wants to take the first watch?" said Mr. Tem. "I will," I replied back. We started to set up camp, laying our backpacks at our heads for pillows and keeping our weapons where we could reach them in case of an emergency.
"Mr. Sapoval?"I asked. "What happened with my scythe?"
"Well, W.A.S.P. has discovered that sometimes emotions influence the weapons,"answered Mr. Sapoval. "The weapons are meant to channel the emotions and personalities of the wielder."
"Okay," I responded quietly. The others laid down out of exhaustion and I stayed awake with my scythe ready. Thank goodness it was quiet now. I could finally think about the feeling of insanity that had come over me during the fight. What was that? Did I go insane? Or maybe I was just really sad. Time ticked by. I wasn't tired so I didn't bother to wake anyone else up. I felt the sadness again. It was heavy. Empty. It was regret. I didn't get to say goodbye to my family. I didn't get to say sorry to my sister. I never got to see my brother again. We could try to bring them back, but how? And if we did, it would never be the same for me. I would always be haunted with the thought of them being former zombies. I noticed I was humming, so I sang the song since no one was awake. I folded my hands and prayed. I hadn't prayed in a while. I had almost forgotten that GOD was the one who had kept us alive. He was with us through everything. I walked over to Charlene and shook her awake. "It's your turn to watch," I said softly. She nodded sluggishly and began to turn around and get up. I laid down and drifted off into a peaceful dreamless slumber.
