𝐌𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐋𝐘𝐍 𝐂𝐋𝐔𝐍𝐆 𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐌𝐀𝐒'𝐒 arm as Newt led them through various halls, doors and up and down stairwells. It was like a maze. Madelyn half expected someone to pop out any minute, catching them in the act. Her heart thumped in her chest from the adrenaline. For the first time in years she felt a sense of control in her life. She felt rebellious and she was enjoying it.They ended up in a dimly lit hall in a basement, where the last door had a sign that read MAINTENANCE.
"This is our favourite hiding spot." Newt informed, pride in his voice.
He opened the door and ushered them into a large dusty room filled with wooden tables, cleaning equipment, boxes and millions of other odds and ends. A dark haired boy was the first to notice their presence. He jumped down from a table he was sitting on.
"What's up, gents?" He greeted them.
"Would you stop saying gents?" Another boy said, dark skinned and older with wise eyes. "It's not funny and besides, if you clearly ain't seen any before, there are two girls here now as well."
"I'm Minho." The boy introduced himself as he walked towards them confidently. "You two seem cooler than I thought." He pointed at Thomas and Teresa. "I half expected a couple of greasy-haired buck toothed weirdos but you actually seem normal!"
Thomas didn't seem to know how to feel about his statement. "Thanks?"
As Madelyn let out a quiet giggle, Minho's eyes fell on her. "And who may this fine stranger be?"
Madelyn bowed her head, feeling the heat rise on her cheeks. She couldn't remember the last time she'd actually had a proper conversation with someone other than her brother. She'd been locked up so long that words seemed to have gotten trapped in her dry throat.
Thomas seemed to notice the girl's shy stance. "This is Madelyn." He gestured towards her. "My little sister."
Minho's eyes widened then flickered towards Newt. "Oh, so this is the famous Madelyn." He voiced, a cheeky grin on his chapped lips. "Nice to finally put a face to the name."
The other boy stepped forwards and pushed Minho out the way. "I'm Alby." He chimed in. "Good to meet you guys."
A wide smile lifted on Madelyn's face. She was actually having fun. She could already see that this group of boys were nothing like the other horrible people here she'd met. Even though it felt strange being in the company of people around her age, she already felt safer than she ever had in her time here.
