The worst thing was, you had nowhere to go. Yet the sleek line of pure muscles that had you boxed into a corner, hadn't actually made any hostile movement towards you. Yet.
Jumping over the heap of scales looked tempting, a soft, pink tongue flickering in and out every so often making you want to at least try. But the note's warning rung in your mind: unless you wanted to become snake food for real, you had to remain calm.
Pushing aside the general discontent making its way through your bones, you dropped your book bag a little harder than was probably necessary. It had been a long, restless night and your poor quality of sleep had already set you in a bit of a foul mood.
"Don't eat me...?" The feel of your wand once again became like lead in your pocket. It was silly but somehow you could see in the snake's eyes that she was a very intelligent animal-by the time your fingertips brushed the weapon, she'd already have you in a death grip.
With no Tom around to negotiate with this adversary, who knew how much she was longing to do that?
Realistically, you knew you should just try to cast a spell, but the thought of having your arms not shield yourself for was too much of a risk for you to consider. It didn't matter if you were in the safety of your own room.
"Can't we talk this out?" You liked at least a bit how your question caused the trekking of the scales to decelerate the slightest bit.
Though she couldn't understand you- maybe she could sense your fear-o-meter going off the charts.
"One, um," you shook the dead rat enticingly by the tail, hoping its meat would look more appealing than yours. "One snake to another? S-sssee? I'm a sssnake t-too, for realsss..." Slytherin robes and impromptu snake impressions —you were pulling out all the stops.
When in doubt, why not hiss? Maybe she wouldn't devour you if you looked crazy enough.
Once again, you smiled a little bit at how Nagini's advances slowed down more, seemingly intrigued.
Then she moved towards you again.
"Frick." You lowered your head and hands in defeat and embarrassment. "I thought for sure that was going to work. I just didn't want to..."
The snake lunged for you, jaws open.
There was no reason you further needed to shriek. It happened quickly. There was a moment of confusion on your part when you didn't feel any pain or strong muscles squeezing the life out of you.
Then Nagini retreated, all satisfied and hungry energy with the rat caught between her needle-like fangs.
"Wha..." You gathered your conscience and watched her go. Audibly gulped when her body wound in on itself back in the corner like nothing happened at all.
That was the first time you 'fed' her.
*~*~*
The entirety of the situation dawned on you after a minute or two.
There was Nagini again. And she was coiled around your birthday present.
The bright smile on your face was rapidly replaced with a shy one. "Hi there, snakey... That's... Sort of my egg you're holding..." You gestured at the human head-sized shape of it, the stirring snout of the animal on the floor creating a cool in your gut you only experienced a handful of times before.
After some staring, and Nagini refusing to move even after offering her a snack (silly you, she only needed to eat one rat a week), you gave up with it. You'd left the bedroom that time with less fear but more annoyance.
