Chapter 2: A Pleasant Memory

"A-Anne's?"

The questions 'Who? What? When? Why?' bombarded his mind.

No. His sister had been cursed. He had failed to find a cure for her. There was no way she could have conceived safely. Unless she's...

"Yes. Does she look like me at all?—No," she answered nonchalantly.

It was true. Despite looking a lot like Sebastian—and his twin... Eli looked nothing like Lucy. Their eye colors were not even similar. Lucy had pale blues while Eli had green ones—a feature she must have taken from her father.

His thoughts started drifting off, imagining what a kid would look like if she were the combination of him and Lucy.

Sebastian slapped himself internally to bring himself back to focusing on the problem at hand.

He eyed the blonde witch curiously, as though suspecting if she could be Boggart brought upon him to toy with his emotions.

"Then why did Eli say that I'm..."

Lucy sighed and rolled her eyes before saying, "She's a Sallow, what do you expect?"

Right. Sallows were known to be mischievous, after all. He and Anne were no better.

The kid smiled coyly at Sebastian while rocking her body back and forth on heels and toes. She looked apologetic, though he could very well tell that she was not.

"So, Anne is...? She had a kid? Why didn't you tell me from the beginning? And how... s-she was sick, wasn't she? Where is she? Who is—" he finally let the questions out.

He was not even sure if he wanted any of those to be answered.

"It's not my story to tell, Sallow. I'm sorry, but none of it is. One thing I can assure you, though, is that she's fine," she assured.

His eyes searched hers to see if she could be lying. She could just be trying to save him from a heart ache, for all he knew. But her eyes smiled at him. Her mouth might not be, but at least her eyes were. They were after all, the windows to one's soul.

Finally, he felt at ease.

'She's fine?'

'She's fine.'

He smiled faintly with his eyes set on the ground. That was probably the best news he had heard since he had broken up with Lucy.

His eyes travelled to Eli again.

Processing all of it was a struggle. One moment he was trying to take in the knowledge of having a daughter he just learned about, and the next, he was told that she was in fact, his cursed sister's. The sister he thought would not live past her teenage years was alive to this day and had a family of her own.

He had also grown accustomed to the fact that he could be the only living Sallow left in the Wizarding world. Thus, whether Elizabeth was his or Anne's, it brought him great joy to learn that he had one more relative he could dote on.

He would be the best doting uncle, if Anne would allow—something Solomon never was.

Taking his silence as an opportunity to get away, Lucy took Eli from Sebastian's side. She might not be happy to leave him this way, but she promised Anne she would keep this secret—especially from Sebastian. She could not afford to let out any more than she was allowed.
