Carrie stopped talking and the presence of unspoken words made the air dense.
"I think you should know" she said and Lynn's heart race rocketed. "I wanted to be with you and James, I really did but..." Carrie sighed.
"Your father had to go back to England because of his job and I couldn't go with him". Lynn's dad was a fixed contract police officer so he would not have been able to quit even if he wanted to. "I couldn't go with him because I was not allowed to apply for a visa..." it looked like Carrie was really struggling to get the words out and Lynn resisted the urge to reach out and comfort her.
"... I had been caught and prosecuted for drugs. It was a stupid mistake that cost me my family."
Lynn was too stunned to speak. She had often wondered why Carrie had not come to England with dad and know she knew, however, Lynn had imagined it was because she didn't love them or she had done something to drive dad away, not this.
