Lynn woke up with the sun on her face and she had to squint to see where she was. The memories of what had happened yesterday came back like a flash flood and delivered a punch to her heart. She got up and her joints groaned from the position she had been sleeping in, her clothes from yesterday still smelt alright and would do for today.

Her first day at... what was it's name? Lynn knew it would take her a month to remember a name so there was no point in worrying about it now. She considered brushing her hair but it always looks the same, slightly messy and unkept, no matter what she did so she had given up years ago trying to tame it.

Her analogue black watch on her wrist had belonged to her father, everything else they owned had either gone to his funeral or her plane ticket and taxi's over here, it was one of the last things left. It read that the time was six thirty and the sun had risen at least an hour earlier. Lynn assumed that no-one would be up yet because the old woman she sat next to on the plane said that American's are so different to us English and don't understand the want to get up early. It was obvious that her opinion was bias, it couldn't be that bad, could it?

It was that bad. The house was completely silent, her footstep did not do much to help that matter. Lynn managed to find her way to the kitchen and to her surprise Mary was in there chopping fruit, she stopped when she saw her.

Mary looked up and smiled, inviting her to sit down on one of the black cushioned stools surrounding the island.

"Why are you up so early, dearie?" Mary queried.

"This is early?" Lynn replied.

"Oh yes, I forgot, you British tend to wake up quite a bit earlier, silly me" she said humouredly, "So, what will you be having for breakfast?". Lynn looked around the kitchen, it had a bit more soul that her bedroom, the slate covered walls and black marbled counter tops, the electric hob and the French doors that opened to a deck which led to the grass.

She saw what Mary was preparing, fruit upon fruit was being chopped and put into a bowl, probably for Carrie and her model diet. Eventually Lynn opted for granola and strawberries with milk.

Mary had to leave half way through her breakfast to take to Carri, the 'very interesting' bowl of fruit. When she came back she handed Lynn a notebook with a white spiral-bound hardcover and a black padlock, for her locker at school, she was told. Mary asked her if she needed anything else. Lynn did not want to use the pens and pencils that she used for art at school so she requested them.
