Lacey didn't know what to say. She had only been at Litchfield for three days, and somehow, she had already found herself in a situation where she could get five more years added to her sentence.
Nicky didn't say anything either, looking at Lacey, expecting her to have an answer to their situation. Chapman stared at Lacey too, both of them thinking Lacey would somehow have an answer.
"Why are you looking at me?" Lacey whispered incredulously. "I got here three days ago!"
Nicky huffed. "I think Piper should be one trying to find a solution, given that she's the one who took the damn screwdriver."
Chapman stayed mute, her eyes glancing back and forth nervously.
"Yeah Piper, why the fuck did you take the screwdriver?" Lacey asked, not being able to come up with a good idea herself as to why someone would try and steal a weapon, knowing exactly what would happen if they did.
"I don't even remember taking it. I just felt it in my pocket, I don't know how it got there," Piper whisper-yelled back to them.
Nicky huffed again, wiping her forehead. "Okay, well I don't know what we're going to do about this, but we need to get to dinner, or we'll all look suspicious as fuck."
Nicky had a good point, and Chapman and Lacey agreed wordlessly as the three of them headed in the direction of the dining hall.
The three of them spotted their friends sitting at a different table, but Nicky led them to a table at the edge of the dining hall, where they were least likely to be overheard by the guards.
She sat down, leaning forward. " Okay guys, we need to figure out what we're going to do about this thing Piper was dumb enough to end up with."
Piper put her face in her hands, shaking her head rigorously. "Oh my god. Oh my god. I can't have an extra five years." Piper looked up, her eyes wide like a deer in headlights. "Oh my god, I can't be in prison for more time, I need to see my brother, and my mom, and my dad, and oh my god I need to check on my business."
Nicky rolled her eyes, "You can't have five more years? Lacey and I have two more years than you in this place, and guess what Piper? We also have lives outside of here we'd like to return to, and our plans to get out of here were going great, until you decided to get us involved with you being an idiot!"
They were still talking with their voices hushed, but Nicky may as well have been yelling.
Piper then looked like she was about to cry. "Oh my god, I'm so sorry. I shouldn't've told you guys about this, now you guys are going down with me."
Nicky flung her hands in the air, frustrated, but Lacey held her hand up. "Guys, none of us are going to go down for this. We need to figure out how to get rid of the screwdriver."
"Yeah, no shit," Nicky said, before adding, "but you do have a point, we need to figure out a plan to get rid of this thing."
"We could flush it down the toilet," Piper suggested, earning unimpressed looks from both the women across from her.
"You fucking kidding me Piper? Our toilets can barely handle two sheets of toilet paper, in what world would they be able to handle a whole screwdriver?"
Lacey would've laughed at what Nicky had just said if she hadn't still been panicking.
"We could sneak it inside someone else's pockets? Let them get caught with it?" Piper proposed meekly.
When Nicky seemed to be seriously considering the idea, Lacey cut them off, "Um, no fucking way are we tryna pin this on someone else unless they actually did something. I ain't gonna be responsible for someone else getting five extra years in prison for something they didn't do."
"Yep, you've got a valid point there, Miss FBI," Nicky said reluctantly, rolling her eyes.
"We could just hide it in the room tomorrow until someone finds it, then they'll think they just lost it?" Piper suggested.
Nicky and Lacey both looked at Piper, nodding, knowing that that was probably going to be the best idea they could come up with.
Lacey walked into the electrical room, her hand clenched tight around the screwdriver hidden in her pocket. Her heart was beating fast in her chest, but she worked to keep herself relaxed. Nicky and Piper followed her into the room, and they walked to the table they were at yesterday casually, trying to avoid any interaction with Luschek or the extra guard in the room.
She had ended up being the one with the screwdriver after Piper and Nicky said she would be the best at lying, since she had been an FBI agent. She wasn't happy with the decision, but she had to admit, she was definitely the most prepared.
They had agreed they weren't going to hide it until near the end of the day, so if it was found they wouldn't have to stick around for too long being questioned. They also figured that it wouldn't be on everyone's mind as much later on, since everyone they looked at right now was scanning the room worriedly, keeping themselves alert for any sight of the missing "weapon".
For the rest of the day, no one mentioned the missing weapon, and no one commented on how Lacey's hand had been sitting in her pocket the entire day. At the end of the day, Lacey leaned against the counter in the back of the room, as Piper returned all the equipment they had been using for the day and Luschek collected the equipment. The guard was also standing by the cage of equipment, watching carefully as every inmate handed over their piece of equipment before he then patted them down.
Nicky and Lacey laughed loudly, earning a dirty look from Luschek. They both smirked at Luschek, while Nicky stepped closer to Lacey, keeping her eyes down, not wanting to watch obviously as Lacey slipped the screwdriver out of her pocket, immediately hiding the piece behind her back. Lacey leaned off the counter slightly, keeping both hands behind her back as the empty one opened the drawer behind her as the other one quickly dropped the screwdriver into the drawer before leaning back against the counter, shutting the drawer quietly.
Both the women breathed out a sigh of relief, glad to finally have the screwdriver out of their possession. After Piper had been patted down, they joined her at the front of the room, leaving the room right in the middle to not catch the eye of the guards.
"Inmate Locke!"
The three women stopped in their tracks, their bodies freezing. Nicky and Piper turned around slowly, but Lacey had already turned around, raising an eyebrow at the guard, hiding her panic.
The guard took a step closer and Lacey crossed her arms. "What?" she asked, as if she was only eager to get to dinner, instead of out of this room where she had just hid the screwdriver.
"I'm going to pat you down," the guard said roughly.
Lacey held her arms up, rolling her eyes, silently pleading he was only patting her down because he didn't like her.
Nicky and Piper held their breath behind her as the guard worked his way up her legs before moving on to her arms. They knew he wouldn't find anything, but hoped that Lacey's act was enough for him to leave them alone.
It seemed like an eternity until he was finally done patting her down, nodding at Lacey to leave the room.
Lacey turned on her heels, walking straight out of the room and not looking back. The two other women walked by her side as they walked silently out of view of the electrical building, not wanting to say anything until they were out of sight from the room.
Nervously glancing behind them, Piper seemed to breathe out all the air she had been holding in. "Oh my god. That was terrifying. Why would he search you?"
Nicky answered for Lacey, "Probably because he thinks she's the most likely to be trying to sneak weapons." Nicky then grinned, "Or because he just wanted to touch her."
Lacey looked at her disgusted, as if she didn't know that was a likely reason. "Ew." She then relaxed, "Either way, we got rid of the screwdriver."
