"Yo Locke." Nicky jumped down from her bed and started pulling on her shoes.
Lacey opened her eyes and sat up, taking out her earbuds that Miss Rosa had given her and pausing her music.
"Time for dinner," Nicky said. "You can eat with me, avoid all the crazies around here."
"Sure," Lacey said with a smile. She jumped off her bed, almost jumping right onto one of Miss Rosa's books.
"Watch it, pretty girl," Miss Rosa said gruffly.
"My bad," Lacey held her hands up in surrender but turned to Nicky and raised her eyebrows at Miss Rosa's nickname.
Nicky's mouth twisted into a smirk as she crossed her arms. "Yeah, pretty girl, watch it."
Nicky turned and walked out the door, Lacey following behind her.
The pair walked side by side down the hallways towards the cafeteria. People they walked past still stared curiously at Lacey, and Lacey could tell by the way Nicky stared down at her feet that it was making her self-conscious. "I guess you're pretty famous," Nicky commented, not looking up.
"Yup, still better than on the outside though."
"You know, all people were talking about for the past week was that you were gonna be coming here," Nicky said.
"Ugh, and here I was thinking I'd be able to just fade into the background," Lacey said, rolling her eyes.
"Yeah, that ain't gonna happen," Nicky laughed. "But hey, people might not mess with you."
"Sure about that? I'm getting some pretty intense hate stares right now."
"Can you fight?" Nicky asked, looking up at Lacey with a raised eyebrow.
"How comforting," Lacey said with a chuckle, trying to laugh off her anxiety of how everyone seriously was looking at her like they wanted to murder her. "But yes, I can fight."
Patting her back and nodding, Nicky said, "Figured, growing up in the Betty and all."
Lacey winced at the name of the neighborhood she had had to survive in for 16 years. "Yeah, teaches some pretty useful stuff."
They arrived in the cafeteria together, and joined the line to get their food, grabbing trays from the pile. "You arrived on a good day," Nicky said to Locke, "it's meatloaf today."
Nicky held her tray out and the woman behind the counter put a piece of meatloaf on her tray, along with a piece of corn. Lacey followed what Nicky was doing, and trailed behind her as she went to a counter and grabbed a cup, turning a tap on and filling it up with water.
Nicky leaned on a counter and waited for Lacey to fill up her cup. "So the Russian lady Red has bright red hair and she runs the kitchen, so don't insult the food in front of her. That's what Chapman did, and she almost got starved to death by Red."
"Okay, that's good to know," Lacey said, grabbing her cup and following Nicky to a table with four women sitting down eating, one of them being Morello.
"Hey guys," Nicky said, setting her tray down next to the group and sitting down. She signaled for Lacey to sit down next to her. "This is Locke everybody, even though you all already knew that."
One of the women, a big butch lesbian sitting next to Morello across from Lacey, raised her eyebrows and grunted. "We're inviting her into the group? You tryna create enemies, Nichols?"
Nicky raised her eyebrows and grinned, "This is Boo, Locke."
Lacey smirked at Boo, "Nice to meet you, Boo."
