The building was usually rather quiet once most people had already left. Still, every now and again a phone would ring in the background either alarming someone about a new case or about a new lead on an ongoing one. A printer going off in the distance, only noticeable in the silence of the night, adding also to the white noise of the office’s latest shift.
Sat on her desk, under some florescent lights, Y/N flicked through the pages she had managed to salvage from the case that had started it all. But she had already been through them, over and over again. So many times that she felt she would be able to recite them by heart if she read them once more. She needed something new, something that could give her a lead into how to continue her investigation. She needed the rest of the file. And she needed access to the database. The problem was: she did not have either.
“Hey, what are you still doing here?” Penelope asked stopping by her desk after seeing her on her way out. “Has the team been assigned a new case?” She added after noticing the yellow folder on her colleague’s hand.
“Um? No.” Y/N said quickly closing the file and putting it away before turning towards the blonde woman with a smile. “What are you still doing here?” She asked raising one eyebrow.
“Just finishing up my new firewall.” She answered leaning against the side of Y/N’s desk. “After what happened, I can’t let anyone else break into my program.” She stated. “What is that?” She asked pointing with her face towards the file Y/N had just left on her desk.
“Nothing.” Y/N said.
“Oh, really?” Penelope said crossing her arms. “So that’s how it is, huh?”
“Trust me. The less you know about that, the better.” She told her.
“It’s the case that got you transferred isn’t it?” Garcia pointed out fixing her glasses. Y/N sighed giving the folder a quick glance.
“Only a part of it.” She answered, and Penelope nodded with understanding. “But I don’t want you to get in trouble so; you saw nothing, heard nothing and know nothing. Okay?” She pointed making the other woman chuckle.
“Where’s the fun in life if there isn’t a little trouble?” She said leaning towards Y/N. “Do you want me to find the rest?” She whispered and Y/N was the one to chuckle that time.
“Not to sound arrogant but, I don’t think you’ve got that kind of access.” She said shaking her head.
“Well, neither do you now. Do ya?” Penelope said straightening her posture. “The important thing is, you know how to get it and I have the equipment. Just think about it.” She proposed. “I would hate to have to visit my very new friend in jail.” She added resting one of her hands on her shoulder.
“I’ll think about it.”
“Great!” Penelope smiled.
“Uhm, girls?” Spencer said watching them from the upper floor. “We have a case.”
“Looks like nobody’s going home tonight.” Penelope sighed.
Standing up from her desk, Y/N placed a comforting hand on her shoulder just like she had done to her before. Turning her around, they climbed up the stairs and walked straight into the conference room following Spencer.
While the rest of the team was already gathered inside, Morgan and Hotchner were still missing. The two being probably the only ones that had left for home.
“Doesn’t anybody ever go home?” Gideon wondered stepping in the room only a few seconds later.
“You’re here.” Elle told him, letting him know he was no different than any of them.
