The morning sun poured into Penelope’s kitchen, casting a warm glow over the table where both women sat. The remnants of a rough night evident in their disheveled appearances and the half-hearted way they picked at their breakfast. Both looking as if they’d rather still be asleep.
As Y/N sipped her coffee, trying to awaken, Penelope rubbed her temples in an effort to shake off her headache. Staring blankly at her food, she struggled to piece together the previous evening. The silence between them, thick with the residue of last night’s events.
“You know, it was really nice of Spencer to come pick us up last night.” Penelope said, her tone casual but her eyes watching Y/N closely. “He really didn’t have to go out of his way like that.” She added.
“Yep.” Y/N answered taking another sip from her beverage. Her head resting on her other palm.
“I barely remember him driving us home, though. I hope we weren’t too much of a hassle.” She said and Y/N chuckled.
“No doubt you don’t remember a thing.” She smiled. “You were a bit tipsy and fell asleep as soon as you got in the car.” She told her. “Spencer was surprisingly pretty cool about it.”
“Was he?” Penelope smiled. Her eyes holding a hint of mischief.
“What?”
“Nothing.” She replied, shaking her head as her smile grew wider. “It’s just… I have a feeling he might be totally into you.” She said turning towards Y/N to be able to see her reaction. Y/N’s head snapped up, eyes wide.
“What? No. I mean, he’s been friendly but that’s all.”
“Oh, come on.” Penelope said, her grin only widening. “It’s not just friendliness. I’ve seen the way he looks at you. Or the way he holds his breath whenever you step too close to him. He gets all nervous, it’s cute.” She said.
“I don’t think so, you must be confused.” Y/N said playing with the mug in her hands.
“No, I never miss out on that kind of stuff. It’s like I have a radar for that. A radar for lovers.” She said making Y/N chuckle. “You know, I’ve always thought you and Spencer had a special connection. And I’ve always rooted for something to happen between you.”
“Well, something did happen.” Y/N said still focused on the mug. Her face slowly turning into a pinker shade due to embarrassment. And mentally, she cursed her tongue for saying things it should’ve kept to itself.
“What?!” Penelope asked leaning closer, deeply intrigued. “Tell me everything!” She demanded.
“It’s nothing really, I just- I kissed him.” Y/N confessed turning to her friend, wincing.
“You kissed him?!” Penelope’s eyes widened in surprise. “Oh my God! This is big! I’ve been hoping for something to happen between you two for ages. I can’t believe I missed it! How did it go?” She asked and Y/N sighed, looking away.
“Not as well as I expected.” She replied cringing at the memory. “I don’t know what I was expecting, really, nor what was I thinking. I shouldn’t have done it.” She said full of regret. “It’s probably for the best that you missed it. I felt like a total fool.”
“Hey, don’t be so hard on yourself.” Penelope said placing a reassuring hand on her arm. “I think Spencer actually likes you. He was probably just thrown off by the surprise. It’s not your fault.”
“It kind of is. I feel so embarrassed.” Y/N said burring her face in her hands. “He seemed like he didn’t know how to react.”
“Look, Reid can be a bit of a mess when it comes to this stuff. He’s always been kind of… awkward. It’s not you, trust me. I really do believe think he likes you, but he’s probably just unsure how to handle it.”
