The night hung thick and heavy, shadows dancing ominously with the blink of the blue lights above the local police cars. Their sirens wailing as the team converged outside of Tobias Hankel’s home. With adrenaline coursing through his veins, they moved swiftly and silently.
“John, Bobby, take the house with Prentiss, Gideon and Hotch.” Farraday ordered his men. “Morgan.”
“What?”
“There's a barn around back.” He said.
“Y/L/N, come on.” Morgan said and she followed.
The air tense with anticipation as they approached the darkened barn. The only sound around them, the soft crunch of dry leaves beneath their boots. Exchanging silent nods, communicating without words, they positioned themselves strategically at the door before entering.
“Oh, damn.” Y/N said illuminating the area with her flashlight to find a pool of blood of whom she could only assume belonged to Mrs. Douglas.
“FBI!” JJ said drawing her gun in the darkness of the barn.
“JJ! JJ, it's Morgan!” He told her. “JJ, it's Morgan and Y/L/N, don't shoot! It's okay. Are you hurt?” He asked approaching her with care.
“Tobias Hankel is the unsub.” She told them.
“Yeah, we know.” He said.
“And we just thought he was a witness.” She added, then pointed towards the dogs lying around the place, covered in blood. “I had to kill them.” She said.
“JJ, where's Reid?” Y/N asked after flashing her light around every corner of the barn to find nothing.
“They just completely tore her apart. There's nothing even left.” She continued still very much in shock.
“JJ, look at me.” Y/N said to her carefully approaching. Hands on her shoulders to help JJ focus on her. “Look at me. Where's Reid?”
“Oh, we split up. He said he was going to go around back.” She replied.
With one single look at Morgan, Y/N walked out of the barn ready to check the back. The silence of the night almost deafening around her as she moved around slowly, quietly. Her weapon drawn and senses heightened as she tried to see far ahead, among the darkness. The tall plants of corn moving with the wind, its narrow leaves creating all types of shadows.
“Hey, is there any sign of him yet?” Emily asked watching Y/N approach the ambulance where the paramedics were checking JJ.
“Farraday’s got every one of their units on the road. He won't make it far.” She told them, running a hand through her hair with a heavy sigh.
“We can't find Reid?” JJ asked this time.
“No, not yet.” Y/N answered, shaking her head. “But I think Reid followed him into the corn field. Looks like somebody got dragged.”
“Hey, what's going on?” Emily asked as the three of them turned around after hearing Farraday talk to someone over the phone.
“Sheriff two towns over just gave directions to a man that fit Hankel's description to a motor lodge in Fort Bend.” He answered after hanging up.
“Let's get Hotch and Gideon.” Y/N said making her way inside the house. The rest following.
The scene inside Hankel’s house was chaotic. Every single room, except for one, had greeted them with a musty odor that lingered in the air. The piles of cluttered belongings, scattered haphazardly throughout the rooms creating a maze-like obstacle course; a testament to the neglect that had befallen the residence. Each item telling a story; shedding light on Tobias’ habits and motives.
