Most lights around the office had either been turned off or dimmed. A large portion of the floor employees had already left and those who hadn’t were getting ready to do so. Maintenance people were slowly starting to arrive. The sound of their appliances at work filling part of the silence.

Flicking through the pages over and over again as her eyes went from the paper to the phone in her hand and back, Y/N tried to find matching information. After Penelope had handed her the bank statements she had found on Oscar Perez account, Y/N had taken no time in recovering some of the deleted messages from Anthony Copland’s phone. The plan was to find something, anything, that proved an existing connection between both men and explained the reason for those transactions.

“Found anything interesting yet?” Penelope asked meeting her at her desk. Her bag hanging from her shoulder and coat in her hands.

“I might have.” Y/N answered looking at Copland’s phone, and Spencer put down the papers he had been working on to listen to her. “It’s a chat between both men. Anthony’s complaining because apparently Oscar only transferred him half the money he was expecting.” She told them looking for that specific part of the conversation. “Oscar tells him he doesn’t have that kind of money at the moment and promises to pay him in a week. To that, Anthony responds that it isn’t the first time and asks if he wants him to -and I quote- ‘tell everything’.”

“So Copland was blackmailing him?” Spencer asked and Y/N nodded.

“We already know Oscar and his father are powerful men. My mother says they’ve ‘built themselves an empire’.” Y/N said. “What could Anthony possibly know about him that would have Oscar spend that kind of money just to keep him quiet?” She questioned.

“I don’t know but his, or even his family’s, reputation must’ve been at stake if they were willing to spend that much just to keep Copland from talking.” Spencer suggested, playing absentmindedly with his pen.

“Do you think Holly might know?” Penelope asked leaning against Y/N’s desk.

“I don’t know. When she called me she said she wanted to talk, but she never explained about what exactly. And then she didn’t even want to talk altogether so...” Y/N answered. “I’ll text her first thing in the morning tomorrow, see if she has anything to say. But I doubt she would want to talk.”

“Well,” Penelope stretched the word as she finished piecing the plan in her head. “if she doesn’t want to talk, maybe you can get him to talk.” She stated.

“What do you mean?” Y/N asked.

“Earlier, you mentioned how your mother though the two of you would make a great match.” She began slowly. “What would happen if you let’s say ‘accidentally’ ran into him at a party? What if you made him talk?”

“I mean, my mother mentioned he seemed interested to meet me after seeing our family portrait but I don’t know. Wouldn’t that be weird?”

“Why would it be? It could be like an undercover mission. And the plan: you romanticizing him into talking.”

“I don’t think that’s such a great idea.” Spencer commented.

“Right?!” Y/N agreed.

“C’mon! When else could you find an opportunity like this? The stars have aligned my friends.” She mentioned and showed them the poster of a social event Oscar was most likely going to attend. “I can get us on that list. What do you say?”

“Exactly, what do I say?” Y/N questioned. “To him. I can’t just walk right in and ask about him about his bank statements.”

“I’m sure you’ve got your own kinds of persuasion.” Penelope stated with a wink. “C’mon, it’ll be fun! And we’ll be there for you if you need anything. Right?” She asked turning towards Spencer. The young man staring at them for a second. Eyes going from one to the other like following a tennis match.
