“Are you sure you want to do this?” Y/N asked moving in her spot to keep herself warm in the morning cold. Both hands buried deep in her pockets. “You’re still in time to back out if you want to.”

“I already told you, I’m a hundred percent in.” Penelope answered pulling at her jacket to keep her from the cold. “Are you, pretty-boy?” She asked turning to Spencer by her side.

With one hand holding onto his satchel and the other inside the front pocket of his pants, Spencer turned to look at Y/N before answering. Her eyes meeting his with expectation, but no trace of judgement in them. It wasn't the first time they saw him but, every time they did, it felt as if it were. Piercing him, and making him feel like he had nothing to hide from them. And maybe it was the fact that they were glossy now, accompanied by a rosy nose and cheeks from the cold, but suddenly he found himself out of words. Lost in them and the intensity with which they stared back at him.

“Spencer?” Penelope repeated bringing him back to reality.

“Sorry.” He said blinking out of his trance. “Yes, I’m in.” He stated.

The restaurant wasn’t as crowded as Y/N had expected it to be. And the reason was, it was probably way too early for people with regular schedules to be out having breakfast. She could barely remember the last time she had had a normal life, and sometimes it was easy to forget people did things at a different pace and times than them. Still, a few couples and business people were scattered around the room filling the air with faint chatter and background noise.

As Y/N had expected, her father showed up later than they had agreed on. Showing up late and leaving way too soon were a classic move from him. He lived in a hurry, but only when it came to matters that in fact did not matter to him.

“So, what did you want to talk about?” He asked after they had placed their orders. Both his hands set on the table, fingers intertwined.

“Like I told you before, I think it’s time for us to make peace.” Y/N said pressing her hands between her thighs.

“Don’t take me for a fool, Y/N.” He said narrowing his eyes at her and then looking away, impatiently searching for the waitress that had taken their orders. Spotting her in the distance, walking towards them carrying a full tray in her hands he turned back towards his daughter. “What do you want?”

“I don’t want to go to jail.” She sighed looking down at her hands.

“Well, that’s too damn bad.” Her father responded as the waitress reached their table placing their coffee orders on top of it. “Thanks.” He told the woman.

“Thank you.” Y/N said lifting her eyes to look at her offering her a small smile before she walked away.

“You should’ve thought about that before poking your nose in business other than your own.” He said licking his spoon and placing it on the small plate, and Y/N had to fight the urge to roll her eyes at him.

“I guess you’re right.” She sighed pouring some sugar on her cup.

“I could put in a good word in for you if you’d like, but I don’t think my word would be of much worth in this case.” He said taking a sip from his beverage. ‘Is it ever?’, Y/N thought without taking her eyes from him. “You’re my daughter after all, it wouldn’t be impartial.”

“No.” She answered. “I wouldn’t be myself if I asked any help from you.”

“Or anybody.” He added taking another sip. “Tell me Y/N, why is that?” He asked placing his white mug down.

“Probably ‘cause I learned early in life that I should not trust anybody.” She said taking a small sip from her drink without breaking eye contact with him. “Ever.” She stated and he laughed.
