【Chapter 8: An Old Friend】

The sun shone through the purple curtains as Xeno rose from his bed. He placed his hands on the bed and stretched his entire body in a catlike manner, yawning loudly. As he put on his gloves and shoes, a knock on the door was heard. Confused, he approached the door to see who was there. It was Xanthus's version of Knuckles, who had a stern look on his face. "Hello.... You." He began. "Oh! Hello other Knucklehead!" The crystal hedgehog greeted him cheerfully. "Why're you here?" He proceeded to ask. "Your highness wanted me to tell you that you will not be allowed to leave your room until he is done with his work." The echidna reported to him. "Hm? Why? Didn't he stopped doing that a while ago?" He asked, feeling confused. "Oh please. Haven't you taken the time to consider your appearance? You look like a monster!" The echidna lashed out, throwing his fist forward. "Am I... Really a monster?" He asked, a bit hurt by the servant's words. "OF COURSE YOU ARE! HAVE YOU LOOKED IN THE MIRROR YOU SON OF A-"
"What's going on here?" A voice suddenly spoke up. As soon as the former guardian heard that voice, he immediately began to shudder. The footsteps became louder and louder, and soon, Xanthus had arrived. "Knuckles, mind explaining what you're doing?" He asked, his voice sounding deep. "Oh-! Uh... Nothing your majesty. I'm just telling this beast not to disturb you while you do your work." The red echidna responded, stuttering with his words. "Hmm.... Really? I don't think telling him to lock himself in here for most of the day seems like asking him kindly not to disturb him. Also, I could've sworn that i heard you yelling at him. No?" The purple hedgehog spoke. "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND! HE'S-"
"Knuckles. I hope YOU understand that just because he's beastly by appearance doesn't mean you have the right to disrespect him. UNDERSTOOD?" Suddenly the king's voice had a bit of a corrupted tone to it. He bent down to get his view on par with Knuckles. His eyes glowing a glistening gold. The red echidna shuddered a bit before he could finally build up a response. "Ye-Yes your highness...." He muttered, bowing down cowardly before scurrying away. After the redhead servant left, Xanthus approached the crystal beast to comfort him, locking the door behind him. "You alright Xeno?" He asked, putting his hand on his shoulder. "I'm fine. Knuckles was being a bit hurtful but it wasn't so bad." The beast replied, lowering his ears slightly. "You're allowed to roam about the castle while I do my work. Just don't disturb me. Okay?" He responded, gesturing his fingers. The crystal hedgehog immediately hugged the other happily, wagging his long tail. The purple hedgehog hugged the other back, smiling and blushing slightly before leaving to do his duties. As the morning turned into the afternoon, Xenophanes was mostly bored. Energised, but bored. He had no one to talk to since Xanthus is busy, the souls and Loss dislike him, and he's feared by about 90% of the kingdom. Noah was surprisingly nice. He would talk to him frequently and he enjoyed some of their conversations. But he was still pretty bored however. As he sat at the dining table, tapping both his fingers and foot, a knock on the door was heard. Out of curiosity and boredom, he approached the door and opened it. The door opened and there was an odd hedgehog. He had faded greenish blue fur, whiskers, rotten yellow teeth, blood dripping out of his eyes and an X mark just like him, though his seemed to be carved in. Feet so big that his black shoes couldn't fit, yellowish fingerless gloves and a black scarf. Xeno immediately recognised him. And he did too. "Ah... Hello again Xen! I wasn't expecting you to be here of all places." Lord X exclaimed, opening up his arms to signify his cheerfulness. "Hello again Lord X!" The crystal hedgehog saluted back, waving his hand. "Is Xanthus around? I wanted to pay him a visit." He asked. "Oh yeah. He's around. He's doing work though." The beast replied, pointing his finger. "Ah. I see. Well I suppose we could wait around here for a bit."
The two hedgehogs walked for a bit until they reached the dining hall. They sat down at the table and waited around. "You want something to eat or nah?" The lord asked, putting his hand on the table. The beast nodded, so X stood up and asked the souls if they could get them something. "Is there anything you want?" He questioned once more. "Just a couple of snacks." He told him. After a while, the souls came back with a lot of snacks in hand. They dumped them on the table and left. X grabbed one of the snacks and lended it to the other hedgehog across the table, who started to eat it heartily. The decayed hedgehog giggled slightly, before he grabbed his own snack and started eating his. While snacking, the crystalline beast wanted to engage in a conversation with his old friend. "Hey X." He began. "How have you been?" He proceeded to ask. "I'm doing alright. Better even." The other answered, biting a snack. "Now, how did someone like you managed to get into such a grand place like this? It's pretty hard to convince someone like Xanthus you know." The Lord then questioned, gesturing his right hand. The crystal hedgehog looked on in thought, trying to conjure up a response. He stared at the other hedgehog, before responding "I... I don't know. He just sorta... Let me in." He replied, his voice a bit shaky. "Hmm.... Interesting. Seems you took his heart the moment you both met." The decayed hedgehog responded, his response sounding like an odd jab. "Took his heart? What does that mean...?" Xeno asked, confused on what the phrase he used meant. "Ah, it appears you don't understand what I'm talking about. Allow me to explain. You see-"
But just as Lord X was about to explain what he was talking about, the door suddenly opened, and a slightly rusted Metal Sonic emerged from the door. "What's Metal doing here?" The crystal hedgehog asked, pointing to the damaged robot. "Hmm? Don't you know? Whenever Xan's got guests over while doing work, he has Metal tell them how much progress he's done." He told him. "Hey hunk of junk. Is mr Purple man done or not?" The metallic faker looked at the two as his eye screen buzzed out and it said a percentage. "70.89%" his screen read. "Huh. Seems like he has some work to do eh?" The lord commented, his expression looking dull. "Wow. I didn't know his Metal Sonic could do that!" Xeno commented, standing up from his chair. "Strange.. You've been living with him for months. Yet you don't know this?" The decaying hedgehog asked, his face looking confused. "Well. His souls tend to make me stay in my room for most of the day without him knowing. So I'm not very aware about most of these. I would just eat breakfast and go into my room and do nothing until someone called me. But now, he's been bringing me along for outings and such." The beast explained, sitting back down onto his chair and gesturing his fingers. "Does he know about that?" Asked the Lord. "Yeah. He's made it so they won't be so harsh on me. They're okay with me.... Most of the time." The crystal hedgehog replied. "Is your experience with Xanthus alright?" The decaying hedgehog questioned once more, grabbing a bag and snacking on the contents inside. "Oh it's been great! He hangs out with me a lot and he's so sweet!" The crystalline hedgehog responded happily, wagging his tail and putting his hands together. "Hm! That's great to hear! Glad to know you're having a good time." The other hedgehog commented, chuckling slightly. "Say. Is there anything about him that sparks you?" Suddenly, the crystal hedgehog turned confused at his odd question. What did he mean by "sparks you?"
"I'm sorry X, but I don't know what you're talking about. Could you perhaps.... Explain what you mean?" He asked, wanting to get a better understanding of what his question meant. Lord X giggled a bit before responding with "What I mean is, I want to know if there's anything about him that grasps your attention or makes you love him a lot." As he stated the implications of his question, he emptied a bag he was eating and threw it away in the nearby trashcan. "Well, he's really friendly and sorta.... Protective over me. Sometimes a bit overprotective." Xeno responded, feeling somewhat sore about calling his best friend overprotective. "Huh. I wasn't expecting him to treat you in such a way." The decaying hedgehog added, weirded out about how the crystal hedgehog describes his best friend as a friendly and protective guy. Even though said guy is the near opposite of what he makes him out to be. The beast noticed his confused expression and wanted to ask him why he looks so puzzled. "Is there something wrong with that?"
"No, no. Its perfectly fine and okay. It's just, i never tend to expect that type of behaviour from Xanthus of all people. It smells rather.... Suspicious." The lord responded, looking off to the side and squinting his eyes in suspicion. As the crystal hedgehog awkwardly stared at the decaying hedgehog who wasn't even looking at him, Metal Sonic, who was just quietly standing around after not being acknowledged for the last couple of minutes, suddenly began beeping loudly. The decaying hedgehog suddenly became alert of his surroundings and noticed the mechanical contraption making a small ruckus. He smiled, showing his rotten yellow teeth before looking back at Xenophanes and leaning forward towards his ear. "Something tells me he's done~" He murmured into the others ear. Just as he whispered his words, the door suddenly opened and the yellow eyed freak emerged, looking rather dazed and tired. He pulled a chair from the table and sat down, slamming his head onto the table placing his arms on the table as well. "Ah! Xanthus! Nice to see you once more!" X greeted, smiling creepily and putting his hand up. "Hmm...? Oh hey LX. Didn't see you there. Apologies for my... Less than enthusiastic behaviour. Work was really tiresome today." The purple hedgehog replied, lifting his head up slightly before lightly slamming it onto the table. "Tiresome work? That's a rare occurrence." The decayed hedgehog cackled jokingly, putting his big feet on the table. "Mmmph... Yeah i know." The king mumbled before he turned to the crystallised faker. "Anyway, Xeno, this is Lord X. Or just X or LX for short. He's my good friend. It seems you and him are getting along quite well. I'm quite glad." The tar hedgehog commented, perking up slightly. "Actually, I've met X before." The crystal hedgehog added, gesturing his finger. Suddenly, the purple hedgehog perked up quickly in surprise. "WHAT?!" He exclaimed loudly, slamming his hands onto the table and standing up. "X, you never told me about this?!"
"Well to be fair, I didn't know he LIVED in your castle. I met him like, two times and that was it." The lord detailed, gesturing his hands around. "Huh. What were they like?" The purple hedgehog inquired, wanting to know more about how they met. "First one was when he somehow managed to end up in my realm of all places. At first, he was aggressive, but eventually he became more and more docile the longer he stayed there. Second time was when he came by for shelter, nothing much happened. No noteworthy or meaningful interactions." The decaying hedgehog described, putting his feet down and crossing his arms. "Hmm, how intriguing." The tar hedgehog commented, sitting back down onto his chair. "What about Xan? How'd you met him?" The crystalline beast asked, perking up from his seat a little. "I met him during high school! I was the one who helped guide him through his.... Interesting dilemma." The lord replied, his expression dulled near the end of his sentence. "Lets try not to bring up old, sour times anymore. Okay X?" The purple hedgehog requested, pointing his finger at him. "Don't worry, I won't." The decayed hedgehog agreed, before he went ahead and asked "Sooo...... What do y'all wanna do?"
"Oo! We could go out together! How about that?" The crystal hedgehog suggested, standing up from his chair and putting his hand onto the table. "Ehhh.... I don't really feel like going out... Work was exhausting and i really wanna take a rest.... Sorry guys." Xanthus told them, lifting up his head slightly so his golden yellow eyes were glowing lightly but his face still obscured by his arms. "No, that's fine! We completely understand." The beast apologised for some reason, sitting back down and lowering his ears. "Hmm.... How about we do something else instead? Like... We could make lunch together. I'm excellent at cooking." Lord X suggested. "Hm. I suppose that'll work. I have a bit of experience when it comes to cooking myself. And I haven't eaten lunch yet." The purple hedgehog replied, slightly straightening his posture so he could properly see the two hedgehogs. "I've never cooked before, but i'll give it a shot!" The crystal hedgehog added. And so, they all decided to make lunch together. As they walked into the kitchen, the king grabbed three aprons and three chef hats and gave one apron and one chef hat to both hedgehogs. While he put on his own. "So, what do you suggest we should make?" The tar hedgehog asked, gesturing his finger towards the kitchen counter. "Hmm... How about ramen? I'm sure we'd all love to eat that! It's also pretty easy to make, we can add anything to it too!" The decaying hedgehog suggested, adding on some more details. "Ooo! Sounds delicious!" Xeno commented, putting his hands together and wagging his tail. The purple hedgehog laughed as he covered his mouth before he walked towards a cabinet and grabbing a pink ramen pack. "How many packets?" He asked, looking at the two hedgehogs sideways. "I think 3's enough." The lord answered. The other nodded as he then filled up a big pot up with tap water and placed it on the stove. Then he turned it on and as it started to heat up. He then proceeded to put the three packs of raw noodles inside. "Great! We'll start prepping up the ingredients we want to put in." The decayed hedgehog told them. The two hedgehogs agreed with him as they all went ahead and chopped and diced the stuff they want to put into the noodles. The tar hedgehog also grabbed some mayonnaise as he was told the noodles were quite spicy. After putting in all the ingredients they wanted, the king and the lord both sat down at the table. "Keep an eye on the noodles, and also don't put ya hands in the water, kay Xen?" The decaying hedgehog ordered. The crystalline beast nodded in agreement as he went over to the pot of noodles and began observing it. The greenish hedgehog then looked back at the purple hedgehog and proceeded to ask him a question. "Hey Xan, how do you feel about Xenophanes?" He asked, leaving the other in a mild perplexity. "Oh...! Right, well, I think he's very docile and friendly, and he's very enjoyable to be around. He can be a bit chaotic at times but, overall, he's done nothing that've hurt me or anyone. Despite that, my servants don't seem willing to be around him..." He explained, lowering his ears slightly as he looked at the crystal hedgehog sideways. "Your souls have more freedom and will compared to mine. Mine can't even feel emotions!" The other added. "Hmmph. Stop flexing your glorified show muppets X." The purple hedgehog proceeded to look back, halving his eyelids. Lord X entered a state of laughter before looking back at the other and going "You're rather blunt Xanth, I appreciate that about you."
Xanthus smiled and giggled softly. "I suppose things haven't changed much huh?" He joked. As the two hedgehogs laughed about, the crystal beast went up to the king and tapped his shoulders. "What is it Xeno?" He asked. "I think the noodles are done." The beast told him. The three hedgehogs went up to the pot and observed it carefully. After poking the noodles with a fork, they determined it was done. After they placed the pot on the dining table, the purple hedgehog grabbed three plates and placed those on the table. Afterwards, it was time to dig in. As the three hedgehogs ate the ramen heartily, the lord was compelled to ask a couple of questions about the relationship between both his purple and crystal hedgehog friends. "Xanth, apologies if I sound like i'm just asking the same question but I'd just like to know, how would you describe Xen?" He asked bluntly, pausing what he was doing to look at the other. "I uhh.... Uh...." The tar hedgehog stuttered, looking sideways towards the crystal hedgehog and blushing slightly. "I guess you could say he's like a cat and a dog? In the sense that, he's very obedient and loyal and follows me around and stuff. But can also be a bit wild but still act chill? I'm not sure how to describe him without sounding mean spirited..." The purple hedgehog described in a confusing way. "Hmm. Alright, I see. Now, Xenophanes, how would you describe Xanthus?" The lord proceeded to ask the other. "He's a very well mannered friend! He hangs out with me a lot, talks with me a lot, sometimes he hugs me! I'm happy I met him. He's the most greatest best friend I've ever had!" The crystal hedgehog described ecstatically, making the purple hedgehog next to him blush a bit. "Well, I'm sure happy you two are getting along nicely! It's pleasant to know that you two love each other very much!" The lord spoke, winking his left eye to the hedgehog across the table. Suddenly the purple hedgehog across the table started to blush, this time it was much more noticeable. He sat there a bit frozen, his tail wagging as he had a difficult time processing what the decayed hedgehog said. "Of course! I care about my friend so much! And I'm sure he cares about me too! Right Xan?" The beast suddenly spoke, oblivious to the fact the his best friend was unmoving. "Uhmmm.... Xan?" The crystal hedgehogs tone then shifted to a more concerned one, he flailed his arm in front of him, trying to see if he was paying attention. "Ah! Don't fret my crystalline friend! He'll eventually snap out of it." The lord told him as he stood up from his seat and extended his arm towards the purple hedgehog and snapped his fingers. It didn't take long for him to snap back to reality. "Huh? Oh uh.... Sorry about that... I sorta zoned out there." He proceeded to apologise. "Nah, it's fine!" Lord X told him, sitting back down. "Now tell me.... What is it that i said that made you-"
"Can we PLEASE just have a normal lunch where you DON'T ask an annoying question every five minutes?!" He suddenly spoke up, his voice raising and his tone shifting into an angrier one as he slammed the table enraged. The decayed hedgehog flinched slightly, his hand shuddering noticeably before he muttered an "Okay" and continued eating. The two other hedgehogs proceeded to do the same. After a while, they were all done with lunch. In a tired state, the king groggily walked onto the sofa and laid down, grabbing the tv remote and turning on the television. As he laid down and watched the tv, Xenophanes walked in and sat down next to the purple hedgehog. "Hey there Xanni!" He greeted, looking at the other happily. The purple hedgehog briefly looked at the other and halved his eyelids. "Oh. Hey Xeno." He greeted, his tone sounding dry. "You seemed pretty angry when X asked you a bunch of those questions.... Are you upset or anything?" The beast asked nervously, he was about to tap the other but quickly flinched and stopped. "I wasn't. Don't worry. I tend to get a bit cranky after work so... That's somewhat normal? For me and him at least. Sorry if I acted somewhat rude there. I'm just, really tired...." Xanthus elaborated, nearly about to fall asleep. As he struggled to keep his eyelids open, he felt something fall onto his body. He looked down and saw a blanket covering most of his body. And then, he felt something hugging him from behind. Turns out, it was Xeno! He was clutching onto him tightly, purring quietly as he placed his head on top of the other. "Wh-Why are you doing this?!" The purple hedgehog asked, feeling very blushed. "You said you were tired... So I decided to tuck you in!" He answered, lifting his head up and then putting it back onto his head. "Y-you know I have my own bedroom.... Right?" He asked nervously, his hand twitching as he held the others arm. "I know.... But you look pretty tired! I thought you wouldn't be able to return to your room without much energy so I thought it would be a good idea to let you sleep on the sofa with me!" The crystal hedgehog told him, hugging the other in his arms tightly. As he felt his grip tighten, the purple hedgehog turned around to snuggle up against the crystalline hedgehogs chest. It was surprisingly very fluffy and soft, aside from his bumpy crystal X mark. He blushed a bit madly, wagging his tail violently as he gripped the other harder. The beast smiled before he shut his eyes and went to sleep, the purple hedgehog following suit.
As the hours went on into the evening, the two hedgehogs snuggled together on the couch. Surprisingly, no one noticed that  the crystalline beast wasn't around, which wasn't too surprising. Eventually, Lord X noticed the lacking presence of the crystal beast. He searched around the castle, trying to figure out where he is. He eventually came into the living room and saw the purple hedgehog sleeping on the sofa, unaware that the hedgehog he was looking for was right next to him. He noticed the king on the couch and smirked mischievously. He grabbed an airhorn from god knows where and went up to the sleeping hedgehog sneakily.
*HONNNNNNKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!*
Immediately, Xanthus woke up spooked. He had drips of sweat run down his face before he looked at the lord angrily. "X! What was that for?!" He asked angrily, sitting upwards and clenching his fists in annoyance. The decayed hedgehog chuckled in a distorted manner. "Well I HAD to wake you up somehow!" He expressed to him. "Hugghhh..... You know you could've woke us up some other way...." Xenophanes then sat up annoyed as well, though he seemed to hid it well. Suddenly, the decayed hedgehogs faced turned from joyous to.... Genuine surprise. He lowered his ears and covered his mouth, attempting to hide his laughter. He actually wasn't expecting to see the two sleeping together. Perplexed and slightly annoyed, the purple hedgehog stood up from the couch and went up to the lord. "Why are you laughing exactly?" The purple hedgehog questioned, sounding rather confrontational. "Ah... Apologies. I didn't mean to laugh. I just wasn't expecting to see you both together in such a unique circumstance." He replied, his tone sounding joyful. The tar hedgehog blushed madly, he lowered his ears and covered his face while looking away from the greenish hedgehog. "What? Did i upset you~?" He joked. "Shut up...." The purple hedgehog muttered, not even daring to look at the other hedgehog. As the awkward conversation went on, Xeno looked on in confusion. "Uhhh.... What's happening...?" He asked, feeling a bit lost. The rotten hedgehog looked at the beast and walked up to him, patting his shoulder. "Don't worry Xen! It's not important!" He responded. "Annnnyways! I made some dinner for both of you sleepy heads~ Eat up! I'll join you two later."
Lord X then proceeded to leave the living room, leaving the two hedgehogs alone. As the crystal beast watched the other leave, he looked at the other hedgehog and asked "You wanna eat dinner?" The tar hedgehog stopped blushing and stopped covering his face, looking at the beast and nodding. The two hedgehogs walked into the dining room and began eating their dinner, the lord joining in a bit later. After eating dinner, the rotten hedgehog finished up his food and then told the purple hedgehog "Hey, I'm gonna leave soon." The king looked at him and went "Hm. Alright, do you want something before you leave? Why'd you say that out of the blue?" The lord giggled cheerfully, before he responded "Nah! Just wanted to let you know!" The purple hedgehog looked at him awkwardly, before he looked down at his food and continued eating. "Hmm. Alright. Have fun I suppose." He muttered blankly. The lord then stood up and put his hand up. "See ya later Xanth! You'll be coming to the thanksgiving dinner tomorrow right?" He asked. The purple hedgehog nodded softly, smiling while doing so. The decayed hedgehog smiled before he left the castle. I wonder how the thanksgiving dinner will go.
