Kai was trailing Zane and Cole's moves. Their slim bodies dancing with the reciprocating movements. Both of them were way too good and equal that every strike attempt was dodged. On that score it wasn't as interesting.
His eyes strayed on Cole's body. That specific aspect was way more absorbing. All the little details on him, the twinkle in his face as he parried the imminent shuriken, and his slick waist gleaming under the sun. Kai couldn't get enough of the sight.
Kai was quickly back immersed in his thoughts. He brought back to surface what Skylor had said yesterday. Something about them flirting. But Kai had never, at least purposely, flirted with him. But had Cole? And more profoundly thought: how long has Cole liked him? Or was yesterday just for fun? No, Cole's not like that.
Almost invisible smirk appeared on Kai's face as he watched Cole and thought how his brain had never before provoked the idea of him liking his mate – romantically – until yesterday. It felt weird to even say it in his mind, to confess it. Kai didn't know for sure what he was feeling. But the feelings he got when he looked at Cole put wise that this is something different, something special. And how did he know? If he glanced at Lloyd, he wouldn't get butterflies nor strange pressure in his chest. But he didn't get those before for Cole either? Or maybe he just didn't notice or know how to read them.
"Earth to Kai!" Jay shouted and waved his hand in front of Kai's face.
"Yes please," Kai mumbled, dreamily in his thoughts, not realising what he was saying out loud.
Jay looked at Kai confusingly, then the one Kai was staring at, then back at him. Kai saw how Jay's face turned gradually from confusion to amusement when he realised Kai was staring at Cole. He started to blush in embarrassment when Jay burst into laughter.
"Someone's been deep in his thoughts today." Jay laughed.
Kai deduced he was referring to morning when Cole stole, again, his ability to concentrate. But knowing Jay loves to be right, he couldn't admit that it had happened again, for the second time on his watch thoughts of the Master of Earth had won his attention. Kai tried to keep an unbothered expression as he faced the laughing ninja. "What do you want?"
"Clearly not the same as you."
"Jay! Don't annoy him," Nya yelled behind them.
Kai's blood was boiling in annoyance, and he would've sworn Jay would get punched in the face right now if Nya hadn't intervened in their debate. He blamed anger for making his cheeks even more red but deep down he knew he was blushing because Jay had noticed.
"Yeah yeah, sorry." Jay stopped laughing. "Let's have a match. I'm bored of watching them. Their contest will continue likely a day or two since they're so equal."
"After what you said, I don't think I'm coming." Now Kai just purposely bugged him.
"Whatever." Jay sat down displeased.
In a moment, Jay let them use powers because he was too impatient to wait and watch the long-lasting fight.
Cole made the ground jolt with his hammer. Kai could see Wu rushing out of the Monastery with a cup of tea in hands and yelling at them what in the world was happening. But that didn't happen. The old man stayed inside, buried in different kind of scrolls and papers what he had been up to for weeks now.
Instead of Zane toppling over due to the shaking ground, he kept his balance and brought his own powers to use. He froze the tiniest area below Cole and made him slip onto his back. Kai watched painfully as his head hit the stone pavement.
