Once they finally caught up with Dale Earnhart Jr. , ummm Dennis, they started making up time.
Which was good because Livvie and Benji were both in their respective cars whining they were hungry/ thirsty / bored , Theo's Samsung phone was losing charge and he couldn't find the charger at all and Matt was out of his cooking magazines. Being trapped in the cars with their beloved families were starting to put some very unloving thoughts in both Saint and Reed's heads.
Finally they all pulled into what had to be the saddest looking town Theo had ever seen in his life. And he was from Texas. Sweet Flower and DC had their share of poverty but nothing on this level. Rocky Creek reminded him of the pictures he had seen about the depression era days.
They slowly crept down past literally nothing but big old oak trees and rather glorious mountains until they ultimately glimpsed a bit of life in the form of small battered old houses and rusty bikes laying in the unpaved driveways next to pick up trucks. Most had some type of skinny under fed looking dog or mangy cat roaming around. The cats ran when they saw the cars. The dogs barked loudly and a few attempted to chase the cars.
None of them were impressed either with the Confederate flags blowing in the breeze at some houses. Reed and Theo were an interacial couple , Benji was Black and Livvie biracial so that flag didn't inspire good feelings in any of them. Matt texted to Theo asking if the people in Rocky Creek knew that the south lost the civil war and Theo replied that he didn't think so.
Before long they arrived at the Davis family home where they were set to eat what Dennis promised was a " good old home cooked meal ". Then they would check in at the two cabins they had rented. Winnie and Dennis had also rented a cabin because Dennis' mother didn't approve of unmarried couples staying in the same bedroom in her house. It didn't matter that her son and Winnie had been living together " in sin " for the past few years now.
The Davis family lived in a fairly nice looking large sprawling blue and white trim clapboard house that had a really cute white picket fence. And luckily not a sign of a mean underfed dog to Theo's relief. They all parked in a yard that already featured quite a few cars. Some actually looked like they ran.
A older plump lady with briskly curled grey blonde hair and twinkling blue eyes came racing off the front porch with her arms open wide. She had to be Dennis' mother Mary Davis. And those arms immediately snatched up Theo. She hugged him and was nearly crushing the life out of him.
" You just gotta be Winston! ," Theo heard the woman say with excitement even as his face was pressed against her very ample bosom. " You look just like my Dennis described! You just really is cute as a bug's ear , Winston! "
Theo faintly heard everyone laughing. Even his son. Even Reed. The traitors.
