"I didn't even hear you come in." Adrien sat in the kitchen with a glass of whiskey in hand. He took a sip as he hunched over the counter in defeat. If he weren't so easy to read I wouldn't know he looked stressed out of his mind. It's nothing new, to be honest.
"You were showering when I got back. I was going to wait for you to finish to talk to you." He says quietly like this conversation is hard even to process. I'm all too familiar with the sight of a drunk person.
"I'm sorry Katie. I fucked up today." His voice drops to a whisper. The last thing I expected was an apology when he's done nothing wrong. "What happened?" Adrien shakes his head and lifts the glass to his lips.
I have no clue what he's done but I know whatever amount of alcohol already resting in his stomach is past enough. Quickly, I snatch the cup from him and place it behind us in the kitchen sink. The alcohol topples over and runs down the drain.
"Hey, look at me." I spin the island stool so Adrien can look me in the eye. All I find is glassy eyes and a regretful face. "What did you do Adrien?" His response doesn't come in strings of connected words but instead from an envelope in his blazer.
I tear open the envelope finding a check for more cash than I've ever seen or heard of in my life. My eyes scan every detail of the writing until they land on the name written—the name I despise more than anything in this world.
Adrien follows as I angrily chuck the check onto the counter and stro off into the bedroom. "Katie," He pleas. I whip around to look at him. "What the hell is wrong with you? I told you specifically not to do anything and that's exactly what you did! It's like you don't take my warnings seriously. Do you even believe me?"
"Of course I do but I also believe that hiding out like this for the rest of your life is bullshit!" Adrien responds, a bit of sobriety passing into him. "It doesn't matter if it is Adrien! That bullshit is my life, and I'm sorry but you seriously have to accept that. I'm sorry I didn't grow up perfectly like you." The last thing I wanted to do today was fight. It seems like that's all I've ever done in life. Fight and fight until one day I've just given everything I've got and fall.
"There are things we can do to fix that but all you want to do is let people walk over you, sweetheart. I'm sorry you don't see what I do, but I'm not going to stand here and let you continue that path." Adrien seems almost completely sober now, the argument waking him up. Now it's become a fully conscious fight.
"Well it's not really your decision, now is it?" We both go quiet, eyes lingering on the others. Maybe that hit harder than expected. "Adrien I get that you care for me. Trust me I care for you as well but there are also boundaries. I can't have you trying to fix my life for me just because we are sleeping together-"
"Is that what we are?" He cuts me off with a question that winds me. It's also a question I have no answer for. "What? I-"
"Fuck buddies. Is that we are." I don't think I've ever felt so dumbfounded by a question. "To be honest Adrien, I don't know. I don't know what we are, but what I do know is that I'm allowed to think for myself just as much as act. I didn't sleep with you and give you the most vulnerable parts of me for you just to take my entire existence into your hands." I take a seat on the edge of the bed, hands over face. Unsure what to do with any of this, I go quiet.
