Once the two boys got everything they knew their friends would like, they made it over to the cashier. The woman had curly blonde hair with the name tag of "Julia". Johnny was too anxious to put the small dog antique that he previously picked out for Ponyboy into the basket, so he'd just lift it. It was only 56 cents, not that big of a deal.

"Say, Ponyboy, how about we go get Dal or somethin'," Johnny suggested. Ponyboy had that funny feeling in him again, Dally?

Darry was barely okay with Dally being around the house during the regular times, but now that Johnny is crashing with them, Dally has became a rough topic. See, Dally really isn't no harm to them.

He's just... rough. Especially with Johnny and Steve; and God knows how mad Steve can get when someone's bothering him. Ponyboy wasn't too sure if they should go see Dallas, it was still early in the day. Plus, Darry wanted Ponyboy to spend some time with Sodapop since he has a paid-day-off.

"How about we go home, Johnny Cade? Soda has a day off for once, ol' Dal will come along," Ponyboy said.
"Alright, I just haven't seen him in a minute. He hasn't been around the house in a week or so," Johnny said.

It's not that Pony doesn't want Dally around, he does! It's just that him and Darry have gotten along so well recently. Not to be a nasty bitch, but Dallas drinks all of Darry's beer whenever he's over, so it's probably for the better.

It was currently December, obviously. Why else would they be searching for Christmas presents? It was mighty cold outside, and poor Ponyboy forgot his jacket. Of course, this didn't just go unnoticed by Johnny, he notices every move anyone makes next to him. It's natural growing up how and where he did.

"Pony, you alright? You're shakin' like a leaf," Johnny asked. Ponyboy knew Johnny is selfless enough to give his jacket away, so Ponyboy tried to change the subject, "Do you think Soda's up by now?"

"Ponyboy, you're shivering. Taking my jacket," Johnny said, slipping his jacket off. He was pretty used to the cold, just a few months ago he slept in the freezing cold just about every night.

Ponyboy didn't want to take it, but still did. He knew Johnny wouldn't stop complaining and begging him to just take it. Maybe Johnny did look out for Ponyboy just as much.

The two boys walked back to the Curtis house, hand in hand. For warmth, of course.

The wind was hustling, to the point the leaves were making one of those tornados. Johnny had both of his hands occupied, one in Pony's and the other holding the basket. They were walking at a normal pace, but it seemed a little too fast for Johnny. His shoe laces were untied, he could feel his jeans rub against his thighs, his hair was getting in his face, and there was a throbbing ache nearing his head.

Ponyboy was in his own little world, he didn't notice. No one could have noticed. Johnny was as good as hiding his emotions like Katie Holmes hiding her divorce. The urge to throw up hit him, he had to resist the urge to just drop down and take it.

Johnny desperately wanted to ask the older boy how far away from the house they were, but he felt if he talked he would throw up. Or, Ponyboy would stop walking and it would take longer to get there.

As the two boys kept walking, Johnny could feel him and Pony's hands sweating up against each other.

Johnny looked up from the ground and saw the Curtis house in view, "Only a few more steps," he kept repeating in his head. It's as simple like your sibling yelling at you to speak or sing to yourself in your head, not aloud. He closed his eyes while walking, and that's when Ponyboy knew something was up. "Let me carry that Johnny, least I could do since you gave me your jacket," Ponyboy suggested.

Johnny snapped his eyes open, reluctantly handing Ponyboy the basket. "Shoot, Pone, when we get inside I'm gonna need to use the bathroom," Johnny said. Ponyboy just nodded, never taking his eyes off of the younger boy. He was really worried for him at that point. When the two made it to the gate, Ponyboy sadly let go of the other boy's hand. He opened the gate, leading Johnny with a hand on his back. Johnny was now playing with his hair. Ponyboy always noticed this as a coping mechanism.

They both silently prayed that it wouldn't be loud inside. When the two got inside, the only thing on their minds was getting upstairs. It wasn't terribly cold outside, that couldn't have been the cause of Johnny's 'sickness'.
If so, Ponyboy would at least be feeling 1/4 of what Johnny's going through. It didn't make sense.

Johnny didn't care if it made sense or not, because when he got to that bathroom he puked out all of his insides. Luckily, Ponyboy was there for him and could move the loose strands of the boys hair from his face.

Once Johnny finished, the two boys just sat in silence. Soon, Johnny leaned his back into Ponyboy. Ponyboy rested against the tub, Johnny practically in his lap. Johnny immediately fell asleep, Ponyboy mesmerized by him. Even though he just threw up, Ponyboy still thought that Johnny was beautiful.

Good thing the bathroom door was shut, or the whole gang would be at his feet. "Johnny, do you need a shower, or a bath? I can help you," Ponyboy suggested. Johnny just nodded his head, too weak to talk.

"Okay, darlin'," Ponyboy whispered into his ear, trying to make his mother hen instincts flash out. Ponyboy's always been like this, wanting to take care of everyone and everything 24/7.

After a few seconds of remaining by the tub, Ponyboy sat up a bit, signaling to Johnny he also had to sit up. All Ponyboy wanted to do was hold him in his arms and tell him it'll all be alright.

Ponyboy helped Johnny stand up and slowly made their way to the counter.
Ponyboy lifted Johnny up onto the counter, taking off his shirt. He got the water going while Johnny did the rest. Pony put some bubbles, got the random cup out of the tub and lead Johnny to bathe.

"There, that must feel so much better," Ponyboy said when Johnny was finally in the water. Johnny hummed in response and closed his eyes.
