It was just a normal day in the Curtis household, Darry up at the crack of dawn, Ponyboy getting dressed with Johnny fast asleep under the pile of blankets, and Sodapop snoring down the hallway.
Darry and Ponyboy were more alike than they thought.
While Ponyboy was brushing his teeth, some toothpaste fell from out of his mouth onto his shirt. "Shit," the young brunette muttered out.
While Darry was buttoning up his work shirt, a button fell off and under the counter. "Shi- shoot," Darry said a little louder than he intended.
Ponyboy got a piece of toilet paper to wipe off the splash of toothpaste, but it left a white stain. The boy blushed and just decided to put on a new shirt.
Darry went to get his mother's sewing kit from her old closet and tried to look for the button. It would look a bit trashy showing up to work with a different colored button, but the business did provide the shirt for him so it was pretty much their fault.
Ponyboy carried onto his morning routine, and then woke up Johnny.
"Johnny, let's go, we have to get Christmas gifts today."
They both saved up enough to get everyone in the gang something for Christmas by doing Tim's dirty work. Well, not really dirty work. Just washing his car, shed, and shoes. And a little bit of groceries... but at least they have the money now!
It was like this every morning, Ponyboy waking Johnny up, Johnny fighting against the urge to close his eyes, and so on. "I'm comin', Pone," Johnny said as he stirred awake. He sat on the edge of the bed, doing his daily stare at the wall.
There were pictures of him with all of his friends, but there were more pictures of Johnny being goofy than anything else. Ponyboy loved taking pictures with a Polaroid camera he got for Christmas a few years back.
Johnny slowly got up, groaning a bit. His neck was sore from sleeping the wrong way.
He sorted through his clothes, GZA playing in the background. Picking a black band tee, with baggy jeans he headed to the bathroom with Ponyboy.
This was usual for two, one taking a piss while one was standing by the mirror. Johnny was washing his face, careful to not get any of his hair wet. Ponyboy soon finished and moved Johnny to the side while washing his hands quickly.
They both were pretty hygienic!
Ponyboy was soon finished, and Johnny could resume washing his face.
"Pone, you and Johnny going out today or what?" Darry questioned from downstairs. One of his biggest pet peeves is listening to Ponyboy blabber about how his food is cold. "Yeah, we're coming, Darry," Ponyboy responded.
They soon made it downstairs, ready for breakfast. "Alright, I'm giving you each ten dollars, just for working so hard these past two days," Darry said.
They haven't just been doing work for Tim, they've also done some extra Curtis chores here and there.
The two boys are their breakfast and hurried out the door. Outside, Two-Bit and Steve were trying to fix Darry's truck. It made a weird noise whenever it was being used, and Steve could feel his brains turn to mush.
Two-Bit wasn't helping much, just talking. Johnny could see the look of annoyance on Steve's face and winced. He hated when Steve got mad, especially at one of their friends. Johnny and Steve were pretty close, both knowing abuse in the walls of their own home.
Ponyboy didn't seem to notice, so they continued their way down to the antique shop.
These two couldn't keep quiet, they just kept talking!
"No, if you had to buy something over $100, what would it be," Johnny asked. Ponyboy, being the nerd he is, said new reading glasses. Not just any reading glasses, good reading glasses, like the Socs use. "What about you, Johnny Cade?"
Now, Johnny had to think about this. Because if he chose new shoes or jacket, it would probably get stolen. But, if he chose something nicer like a camera, his parents would probably find it.
"Probably one of those fancy wrenches for Steve," Johnny answered. "Really? Nothing for yourself," Ponyboy asked.
"Nah, it'll just get ruined or stolen in the end."
Pony glanced over at Johnny, then the ground. "Well, I'd buy you something. Like uh.. I would buy you a book with my glasses, then I could read it to you," Ponyboy explained. Johnny felt a blush creep up his neck, "Gee, thanks Ponyboy." "No biggie, Johnnycakes! It's just pretend anyway," Ponyboy said.
Johnny's always looked up to Ponyboy, but now, with the sunrise resting against his pale face, he could sort out every beauty mark on his face. He was a real looker. Everybody, even Socs, in the city of Tulsa could agree! Johnny used the term pretty, it was more suiting. Well, for Ponyboy. He sure wasn't like James Dean, he was more on the handsome side. More of ehh.. Sal Mineo. Sal Mineo was a pretty boy, just like Ponyboy.
"Say, Johnny, we might as well use those ten dollars for a smoke and pop," Ponyboy suggested. Johnny could never reject a fresh pack, "Well, I don't see why not!"
The two made their way to the nearest gas station and got some kools with two bottles of Pepsi. Yes, they did spend all of the ten dollars Darry graciously gave them on Pepsi and cigarettes. The Pepsi was pretty cheap, so they bought as much cigarettes they could with the left over they had. The two boys were ecstatic, they wouldn't run out for weeks! Well, Ponyboy couldn't be trusted. He's probably smoke them all in a day!
"Now, Pony, I want these to last at least a week. Be wise and watch your smoke, young man," Johnny joked. "Alright, Darry," Ponyboy joked back. There was never an awkward moment between them. They were simply just two boys happy to be friends.
They soon got to the antique store, and immediately went over to the almost empty section. Even though it was only 8 A.M is Tulsa, this antique store was like New York City during Christmas time. They both had six gifts to buy, and each of them had $43.62. A good thing about this very populated store, it was very cheap as well.
Something caught Ponyboy's eye, a small antique dog. He couldn't see him giving it to anyone else but himself. He did consider buying it for Steve and just snag it after Christmas dinner, but it would be too obvious. Plus, Steve would probably break it before dinner!
"What do you see, Ponyboy," Johnny asked. Ponyboy flinched out of his thoughts, "Just a dog," he stated calmly, "it sure is neat, though."
Johnny kept this in mind, nodded his head, and Ponyboy being oblivious as he is, walked away while Johnny stuffed it in his pocket. He wasn't going to steal the frail dog, just store it under other things for other people once he has them. The glass dog was only 56 cents, so he could get Ponyboy another gift. He was thinking about getting some type of vinyl to go with Pony's record player that's collecting dust. Johnny could tell he was sick of the two vinyls he already had, and was just too guilty to ask Darry for more.
Ponyboy was strolling down the isles when he spotted it; the best gift he could give Sodapop! It was a ring with a molded line going all the way around, and it was only fifteen dollars! He happily picked it up and looked to find a basket to put everything in like he should've done when they first got into the store.
He ventured back to Johnny, who had some baseball cards with him, probably for Darry. He doesn't only like football! "Here, Johnny. I'm not that mean, I wouldn't make you carry everything," Ponyboy teased. Johnny chuckled and put the baseball cards in the basket. "Come on Johnny, there's probably some more things over here," Ponyboy suggested. Johnny reluctantly followed.
