i feel gulp fall down my throat as i swallowed, i could feel ben's pain as he screams for the last time as the doors closed shut.

the glade went quiet and i could feel tears forming in my eyes. "how could you do that to him?!" i yell.

everyone looked at me, confused. almost feeling no empathy. alby spoke up. "he belongs to the maze now."

alby was the first to walk away as the crowd follows still staying quiet. newt looked towards me with sympathy but still continued to follow alby.

i turn to look at the maze walls, not hearing a peep from ben. i feel a cry fall down my cheek as my shaking hands wipe it.

chuck rubbed my back. "it's protocol greenie."

chuck to also followed behind alby, leaving me standing there silently.

it was a silent night as gally was carving a cross across ben's name on the stone wall.

i was watching him intently as chuck was talking with thomas next to me. "do you think he'll make it?" thomas asks.
chuck replies with. "no. no one survives a night in the maze."

i could feel thomas sharing empathy with me as he was frowning watching gally as well.

there was no bonfire tonight as everyone was exhausted.

i stayed up all night staring at the stars, the sound of grasshoppers and the wind whistling kept me up mostly.

i finally had enough of staying up so i got dressed and headed towards the builders hut, pacing myself as i lifted the next mornings logs.
it felt good to get that work done, i quickly fell asleep.

i wake up still hearing the crickets in the grass and the sun hasn't even set yet. i look over to the walls, seeing newt, minho and alby.
my brow raised. what are they doing?

newt taps alby and minho on their backs as they enter the maze, newt turned around noticing me watching. i quickly turnt around, my back to him, hoping he didn't see me.

i managed to sleep the extra two hours until gally woke me up yelling as usual. "GET UP SHANK!" he then continued to throw water onto my face. i gasp, wiping my eyes.
"WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?!"

he rolled his eyes, throwing the bucket on the floor. "time to get to work greenie."
my jaw clenched. "i've already done my work, so let me sleep."

gally's eyes turnt to the none existent pile of logs. "when did you do that?"
i groan, falling back onto my hammock. "why does it matter?"

gally grabbed my hand and pulled me out of hammock, i yelled at him. "WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?!"

i held a finger up at his lips. "you're my problem greenie. work on the other pile." he moved his finger to point towards the leftover pile of logs.

he strolled away quickly. i quietly kicked the tree in anger. i calmed myself down and got to work.

the whole time i kept my eyes on the maze, this made my work much slower.
"pick up the pace greenie or i'll make you work on a real structure."
i rolled my eyes, averting my attention back to the unfinished pile of work.

eventually i finished my job slower than the others as i drag my feet towards teresa, newt and chuck.

teresa handed me a cup of cold water, almost laughing at my pain. "i hate being a builder."
newt jumped in. "you'll get used to it eventually."

my eyes lock with newt. so many questions were in my head that it was suffocating me. i had to ask.
"how come alby can go into the maze?"
"well things are different now. he went to retrace ben's footsteps before sundown." he replied.

a sudden gray wave cloud came in unexpectedly, playing the pathetic fallacy card as everyone ran to hide under the hammocks roof.

thomas lent against a pillar next to newt, who of which was looking concerned at the maze.
"they should be back by now." thomas asserts, tapping his fingers.
"what happens if they don't make it?"

thomas bit his lip. "they'll make it." he shouts over the loud roaring of thunder.

the crowd was glaring silently at the walls, praying that they make it out alive before the walls start to close in.

gally was by himself lingering over looking into the rain.
i could barely hear the conversations around me as i was shivering and petrified that what happened to ben will happen to them as well.

eventually the rain stopped and everyone made their way to the entrance of the maze, looking intently at the dark walls before them.

thomas looked antsy and nervous as he spoke. "guys, why can't we send someone in after them?"
gally replied, crouching. "that's against the rules. we can't risk anyone else."

the wind howls and everyone shields their eyes as debris flies. the stiff walls making the loudest noise and everyone gets much more uncomfortable.

the tension in the air was thick and the wall started slowly falling in.
thomas spots minho and alby yelling and pointing. "there!"

minho audibly grunts as seeing alby on the floor, he attempts to pull him to the entrance.
chuck screams. "COME ON MINHO, YOU CAN DO IT!"
everybody begins to cheer for minho, chanting for him to make it.

i hold my hand over my mouth as everything feels too real. i was stood next to gally and my brother.
i was holding tightly onto my brothers arm, he was almost soothing me.
"MINHO! YOU GOTTA LEAVE ME!" gally yells over the screaming.

everything felt in slow motion as i felt my brother let go of me.
he fell forwards towards the wall. "NO!" i screamed, attempting to reach for him as gally held me back.

he fell through the tight walls and fell to the other side.
i fell to my knees, witnessing my brother being sentenced to death.
