In love but too afraid to confess until it's too lat trope, classic. During this I think Levi had developed some unhealthy attachment to Ash while he was captured. Most likely Stockholm syndrome.
Stockholm syndrome is when a victim experiences feelings of affection or empathises with their captor/abuser. In this case, both of them fell in love.
Ash didn't understand his feelings and thought of him more as a pet, or companion rather than a lover. Levi knew he was in love but was too afraid to confess as he didn't think it was right to love his captor.
