"This is it, guys," Logan mumbled. We were backstage at the competition, finally. Through the six of us there was a jumble of nervousness and excitement. We were announced to stage, and we quickly took our spots.
On a raised platform, I stood there with my bass, slightly below me on either side were Zahra, on her drums, and Jasper, with his piano. Below them, but centered with me, was Maya, who sat with DJ equipment and her computer. On the stage, Logan and Avery walked around as they sang.
Everyone knows that the singer's are also entertainment, they had to be able to walk around- and they did.
Lights bounced from off the stage and the walls as a large crowd quietly cheered us on. Hopeful for what we'd play.
We started with our opener, "The Centipedes Chant"
The lights around us dimmed as I began to strum simple chords on my bass, soon picked up by Zahra's drums, and Logan began to sing his lines- followed by Avery's backup lines.
"In the shadows, where the centipedes dance, whispering secrets, in their strange romance. Underneath the moon's enchanting light, they crawl and they sway through the endless night." Logan sang through the microphone.
The crowd cheered as they realized what we were playing- what we were doing. The cheers and whoops continued as Avery took over singing.
"Their legs like a thousand strings, playing tunes only they can sing. In the darkness, they find their way, Guided by the stars' gentle sway." His voice was smooth but deeper than Logan's, offering the perfect song for a duo. Though it wasn't as if they were singing at each other, but like they were the same being.
Their vocals came together as they sang, melodic tunes from Jasper's keyboard picked up, slowing the song down.
"Oh, the centipedes chant, in the dead of night, their melody haunting, their rhythm just right. Through the cracks and the crevices, they roam, In their silent symphony, they find their home. Through the tangled webs and forgotten places,
they move with grace, leaving faint traces. In the depths of the earth, they weave their spell, a secret language only they can tell."
Logan's vocal's began to take over as he continued the song, "Their bodies like a winding road, through the mysteries they've always known. In the silence, they hear the call, echoes of a world that enthralls. Oh, the centipedes chant, in the dead of night, their melody haunting, their rhythm just right. Through the cracks and the crevices, they roam, In their silent symphony, they find their home." Logan sings the chorus by himself this time.
Avery takes over, evening out the playing field for the two of them as they sing. "In the whispers of the wind, they find their voice, in the echoes of the past, they rejoice.
Their ancient song, a timeless dance, in the hidden corners, they take their chance. Oh, the centipedes chant, in the dead of night, their melody haunting, their rhythm just right. Through the cracks and the crevices, they roam, In their silent symphony, they find their home."
The quickened and hardened part of the song picks up again as the song ends, "So listen close, when the night is still, you might just hear their song if you will. For in the darkness, they softly hum, the centipedes chant, forever young."
As the song comes to a finish, the crowd grows louder and louder, cheering us on. We smile and leave the stage with our instruments.

We made it farther and farther into the competition singing song after song until eventually we were the last ones against two other bands known as Death Ray Ketchup and Your Moms Purse.
