"(Y/N). May we speak in private?" That sort of question was something that sparked certain emotions, especially when the speaker was your fiance, but knowing Hubert, this likely had nothing to do with our arranged marriage, but rather, an instruction from Lady Edelgard.
Everyone in the Adrestian household vaguely knew of our relationship, but the topic didn't often come up, since we mainly viewed it as part of the job, and kept it as streamlined and professional as imaginable. We'd been engaged since we were children, after all. We were comfortable with each other, but both of our priorities revolved around whom we served, the heiress Edelgard who was destined to become the emperor someday once her uncle passed on his crown.
I offered Hubert a curt nod in response. "Of course." What wasn't said but was transmitted through the slight flicker in his steely gaze was that this wasn't any regular order, not that Hubert would ever dream of defying Edelgard's word, as it was always final.
In addition to that, it was the day before we were to be admitted into the prestigious academy hosted in Garreg Mach Monastery. Likely more than not, it had something to do with our admission, although I couldn't quite fathom why that would worry Hubert.
Well, perhaps worry wasn't the word. Hubert rarely showed any emotion at all — other than his recurring ghoulish glee when it came to combat — and most only saw him as Edelgard's intimidating bodyguard that no one should dare mess with. But a select few, meaning only Edelgard and I, who had known that dark-haired male for the majority of our lives, could tell when something was amiss behind his cold expression.
Regardless, my curious speculations would do me no good until it was revealed. Once Hubert was sure we were alone, he spoke at last in his low, unchanging voice, "Lady Edelgard has expressed her wishes in which houses we are to join." He begins slowly.
When he hesitated, which was extremely out of character for him, I asked in concern, "Are we not all going to join the Black Eagles, as we all originate from the Empire?"
"That's just it. She had requested that you infiltrate the Blue Lions for reasons she hasn't yet exposed. You have no further orders, just that you keep watch on their house leader, Prince Dimitri." His pale emerald eyes darted away from me when he said this, and realization washed over me. I wasn't going to be with them... I'd have to play the role of a citizen from the Kingdom, and alone at that...
I pressed my lips together into a thin line, and, loyalty topping all, I dipped my head in another slight nod. "I see." My voice comes out much quieter than I had thought it would. I was prepared to take down an entire army for my lady and fellow retainer, but this hit me hard. Really hard. I likely couldn't even acknowledge my now rival house, meaning no interaction with either of them.
For a fleeting moment, memories of studying dark magic and tomes with Hubert filled my mind. We'd flip through the hefty volumes that filled the palace's library collection, exchanging valuable tips and spells, spreading out the papers on the floorboards, and sifting through anything that would help us protect and serve Edelgard to the best of our abilities.
Was I so delusional to think I relive those days at the academy? I pushed away those thoughts with great haste, refocusing on Hubert, who had remained silent, seemingly also mulling over Edelgard's decision.
"I'm certain she had her reasons," I murmured softly, gulping down my reluctance. "Well then... for the time being, this is a goodbye, is it not?" When those words left my lips, something inside me hurt. I was first and foremost just another servant of Edelgard, so her desires were my orders, but I had no clue when we would speak casually again, not that we did it very often anyway.
