Author’s Note: I am doing well with my updates lately :) I wonder how long I’ll keep it up...
“Hey, Charlie,” I said, latching onto his arm as I caught up with him walking home from school.
“Hi.”
“You didn’t wait for me.” I feigned a hurt expression.
“Oh, sorry. I’ve...had a lot on my mind.”
“The feelings mutual.” Charlie didn’t say anything so I carried on “what did you mean when you said...about Lewis?”
“It’s what I felt when I saw him. I don’t like it.”
“But what if he needs help?”
“Then we aren’t going to give it. There was some sort of darkness there, Lily.”
“Oh,” I paused again and then smiled at Charlie.
“What?”
“What do you feel when you see me? I’ve always wondered, just never wanted to ask.” A small, almost imperceptible, smile appeared on Charlie’s face. “Nothing,” he said.
“Nothing? Glad I’m so emotionless and bland.” I said, rolling my eyes.
“I didn’t mean it that way, I meant-“
“You just don’t want to tell me...please, Charlie?”
Charlie sighed and stopped at the gate to his house “I’ll tell you someday but...not now. It’s just wrong for the person in question to know what I see. But, since you’re my best friend, I’ll make an exception. Just not now.”
“It’s my head. You should be able to tell me.”
Charlie grinned “I shouldn’t need to tell you, Lily. After all, it is your head.”
The forest. I was there again in the midst of the darkness and the trees. I knelt on the ground, the dampness seeping through my jeans and soaking my legs. The boy was lying on the ground, stiller than before. There seemed to be less blood. My hands didn’t get covered in it as I gingerly reached out and touched his hand. Cold. So very cold. He wasn’t...dead, was he? There was a faint pulse under his skin and I sighed in relief. Then he turned, his head moving slowly. His face...his face...I couldn’t take my eyes away, but I wanted to run. Run so bad. My instincts were screaming at me to get away. But I couldn’t. The hole in his face...wasn’t there. Instead amber eyes stared right through me, flashing red in the moonlight. Blood, dripping from the corner of that twisted smile. The mop of dark hair, falling across his pale forehead. No, no. It couldn’t be. But it was. It was...
I woke up on the floor, my knuckles white from clutching my pillow case. Wait...pillow case? My bedding was strewn around my room, not to mention several pieces of clothes and papers. I groaned, and heaved myself up onto my bed. I sat there for a minute thinking about my dream. About his face. It was Lewis. The boy in my dream. It had to be. It was 6:30 but, Charlie wouldn’t mind if I came over early. I walked down the street and saw Charlie sitting in front of his gate. That’s odd, I thought, looking at my watch. It was only seven o’clock and it was usually me who went to school early, because of my nightmare. It was stranger still to see that Charlie was only wearing his pyjama trousers and T-shirt. I knelt down beside him and looked at his red rimmed eyes and tear stained face. “Charlie,” I said, worried. “What’s happened?”
“He happened.” Said Charlie, his voice hoarse. “The ghost in my house, happened.”
“Charlie, how long have you been out here?”
“All night.” He didn’t look at me, he didn’t move. He just sat, staring at the ground.
“We’ve got to go inside,” I said, touching his icy arm “it’s freezing.”
“No.” He said “I can’t. I can’t go...”
“Please, Charlie. You’re going to get ill. I’ll come with you.” I said, pressing my hands against the side of his face. His skin was cold. So cold.
“I can’t go back.” Said Charlie, his eyes meeting mine “he comes out of the cellar now. He came up to my room. He-“
“Look, it’s day time. He’s not going to. I’ll stay with you. But he’s only going to get what he wants if you stay out here and get hypothermia.“ I said, getting annoyed. Charlie stood up and began walking to his house. I went up to his room and waited as he stood in the middle of it, just looking. “I think you should stay at home today.”
“No, Lily. I can’t stay here alone.”
“Fine, come to school but you’re staying at my house tonight. You aren’t going to sit up all night again. You’re parents aren’t coming back until tomorrow, are they?” Charlie shook his head “well, you’re not staying on your own again. I’ll tell my mum later.”
“Don’t you mean ask?” Said Charlie, grinning.
“She doesn’t have a choice.” I said, turning to face the landing so Charlie could get dressed. I heard him laughing “anyway, why did you come over so early?” I’d completely forgotten about my nightmare when I’d seen Charlie and a lump formed in my throat. “My nightmare.”
“What happened?”
“I...Charlie. The boy, in the forest...”
“The one without a face?”
“Well, that’s the thing. You see, he does have a face. Charlie, the boy in my dream is Lewis.”
“It’s probably just because I told you what I felt about him the other day. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have. I just didn’t want you getting mixed up in some problem you can’t fix.” Said Charlie, walking past me.
“That’s probably all it is.” I said, following him down the stairs.
