Author’s Note: The much awaited chapter has arrived :) Sorry about leaving you hanging, I hope this makes up for it.
I pulled away from the knife at my neck and turned around to see Lewis, grinning at me in the shadow of my room. “What do you want?” I spat.
“I thought I made that quite clear last time we met.” He sneered, brandishing his knife.
“You didn’t do a very good job of it though, did you?” I knew I shouldn’t provoke him but, I really couldn’t help it.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about, Lily. Just give it up now,” he pressed the knife against my throat. I could feel my pulse, beating against the blade. I tried to calm my breathing, afraid that if my pulse grew faster, I would be dead. “Help,” I cried.
“Your screams won’t save you now.” Lewis laughed “they can’t hear you.”
“What have you done to them?” I snapped.
“They’re...sleeping.” He flashed me a smile.
“Why do you want my soul, Lewis?” I asked, sighing.
“I need it...he needs it.”
“Who’s he, Lewis?”
“I-“ he began and then he got angry again “none of your business!”
“I can help you, you know. Just, tell me, why do you want my soul?”
Lewis’s grip slackened on the knife and he whispered “I don’t...I don’t want to become lost. I...I’d rather live or...die.” He looked down, tears in his eyes. I took my chance and grabbed the knife from him. He stepped back and made no move to stop me. Tears spilled from his eyes and he sat down on the floor in defeat.
“Don’t pull the little boy lost act on me again, Lewis. It’s not going to work.” I said, clutching the knife protectively in front of me “I felt sorry for you,” I spat in disgust “but you just threw it back in my face.”
“I’m sorry, Lily.” He said, sobbing “I don’t want to be lost...kill me.” He looked at me then, his eyes amber, not red and I bit my lip. “Kill me, please,” his voice was weak and his hand shook. “I don’t want this anymore. I don’t want it. Kill me and my soul can be free.”
“I...I can’t-“ I said, taking a step back, unsure of what to do.
Lewis stood up and came and grabbed my shoulders “kill me, Lily. Now, with that knife in your hand. Please...” I’d never seen such despair in someone’s eyes. Never seen such sadness. But he was evil. Lewis was evil...wasn’t he?
“No, Lewis-“ I pushed him away “I won’t kill you.”
“Please! I may as well already be dead. My life is gone but...at least grant me a death.” I stood there, shocked. What was Lewis talking about? I almost felt sorry for him. Almost. That was when his eyes turned red and he slammed his fist into the wall. “Give me your soul and all this will be over.” He said coming over to me.
“Never.” I said, holding the knife out in front of me. Lewis eyed it and then his eyes changed, amber again.
“Listen to me,” he whispered urgently, “don’t give me the knife. Don’t give it back. Keep your soul, look after it. But, promise me-“ His eyes flashed red again, just for a moment but Lewis shook his head and they returned to normal. “I’m going to go now. I’ll...leave. But...promise me-“ He cried out and I half wanted to put a hand out to comfort him. “Promise me you’ll stop him. Help...us.” Then his eyes burned red, the iris danced like fire and Lewis fell to the ground and...disappeared.
I was more confused than I ever had been. My mind whirled around in circles. Thinking the same things over and over again. The same clues over and over again. And then Lewis’s words tonight...they didn’t fit. I pushed them into the circle of clues but...they didn’t fit. I couldn’t understand anything. I wasn’t going around in circles now. I had a new lead but...it didn’t make any sense. It made no sense at all. Why did things have to be so complicated? Why did everything have to be hard?
I stood in the middle of my room in the silence. The dead silence and I stared at the spot where Lewis had been. I stood and stared and listened. The silence helped relax my racing mind, the darkness allowed me no distractions. I closed my eyes and thought for what seemed like an eternity then I snapped my eyes open and looked at the clock. Midnight. I clutched the knife in my hand and then, to the air in front of me, I said “I promise.”
Author’s Note: Well, I’m thinking this leaves you with a lot of mixed thoughts. It’s a little confusing but I hope you enjoyed it all the same. I’d love to hear your thoughts :)
