Author’s Note: Thanks for all the lovely comments I’ve been getting :) I really appreciate it.
Hospital food is terrible, it really is, I thought as a nurse took away my tray of half eaten salad. I closed my eyes for a minute, trying to block out the noise of people talking in the other wards. I was still on my own in my room because of my critical condition earlier. Thankfully, nobody had bothered to move me yet. “You’re not going to go to sleep on me now that I’ve bothered to come are you?” I snapped open my eyes to see Charlie grinning at me “I can go if you want.” He teased.
“Charlie!” I said, getting out of bed and hugging him. I don’t think I’ve ever been happier to see someone. I winced as the drip in my arm tugged at my skin and my weak legs buckled beneath me.
“There’s a reason you have a bed in hospital and they don’t keep you standing up, you know.” Said Charlie, helping me back up.
“I know,” I said, rearranging my pillows. “At least my parents were allowed to bring me my clothes. At least I have something to remind me of home.”
“You should have said something earlier. I would have brought your teddy.” I rolled my eyes and Charlie smiled sadly. “I’m sorry. I guess I’m just trying to lighten the mood.”
“Charlie, I’m sorry. I-“
“You don’t have to say anything. I understand.”
“But I do!” I insisted “I was stupid. I should have listened to you and I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Really sorry for doing this to you. I’m going to listen from now on, I promise.”
“I’m just glad you’re alright.”
“I thought I was...Lewis said-“
“I know. I...I’ve been finding out a few things. But I don’t know what to do.” Charlie tugged at his hair “I have to do something. I can’t let something like this happen again. But I don’t know what...”
“What have you been doing?”
“I...please don’t shout at me for this, but I astral projected myself-“
“You said you wouldn’t do that unless you had to.” I said, frowning.
“I know, but I had to. I couldn’t just let you...”
“Let me what?”
“Become like them. Become...lost.”
“What does that mean? Lewis was scared of becoming lost too...”
“I’m not sure what’s going on but, there’s a world, somewhere in between life and death where there are souls and bodies separated from each other.”
“You better not have been there.” I said, an edge to my voice.
“Well...”
“Charlie!” I said, horrified at what he’d risked for me..
“It’s ok, I knew how to get back.”
“But still!”
“Look, the thing is Lewis wants your soul for something, for some reason. But if he takes it you’re going to end up lost. I want to find out why he wants your soul and then see what I can do instead of it.”
“But-“
“No buts. He isn’t having your soul.”
“Is anyone else in danger whilst he’s around?”
“Maybe. He might take other people’s too whilst he’s looking for yours but he only really wants yours.”
“How do you know?”
“I can feel it.”
“Well, to stop other people getting hurt-“
“Lily, understand this. You can’t give him your soul. Not even if it means him leaving other people alone.”
“But-“
“You don’t know what it’s like to lose your soul. You’ve not seen the lost people.”
“Surely it’s better if it’s one person, rather than loads.”
Charlie sighed and looked at me “remember I told you I’d tell you what I see when I look at you?” I nodded, he had all my attention now. “Well, your soul isn’t like other people’s. It’s brighter. Warmer. I don’t know. I don’t really understand it myself, all I know is that ever since I’ve known you, your soul has never looked like anyone else’s. What I’m trying to say is, your soul is special. I don’t know why or how, but I have a feeling that’s why Lewis wants your soul and not someone else’s. “ I wasn’t quite sure what to make of this, I had no idea that my soul was any different to anyone else’s. “Wow, never thought I’d see the day.”
I snapped out of my reverie “what?”
“You. You’re speechless.”
“I don’t know what to say.”
“Exactly. Speechless.” I grinned and poked Charlie in the arm. “Well, I’d better go now.”
“What, why?”
“My parents are going to think I’ve got lost. That, or I’ve decided to stay here myself. After all, I’ve heard to food is great.”
I grimaced “yeah...amazing.”
Charlie laughed “I’ll see you soon then.”
“Bye.” I gave a small wave as he left and I lay back on my bed.
I was rather worried now. Worried about my soul and it being taken. I wondered if I would still have my nightmare and if...if Lewis could steal my soul from there? Why did it have to be me with the ‘special’ soul? I could have settled for an average one if it meant being left alone.
Author’s Note: Hope you enjoyed this, even though not a lot happened. It was just to fill the gap and move the story along. Anyway, thanks for reading and I’d love to hear what you thought :)
